Chapter 91: Jokes

Chapter 91: Joking
After bidding farewell to Quiller and his party, Paul went back to his office, and in addition to his chief secretary, Bona, he called up his new advisor, Lardy.

“Welcome, Ms. Ladi, may I ask you a personal question?”

“Please ask, Lord Gladman.”

“Why did you jump ship? Uh …… that is, you gave up your original career as an adventurer and came to me as a counselor.”

Lardy replied, “Lord Gleeman, I am a museum scholar, and I originally joined the adventuring group to travel around to increase my knowledge, and now I think it’s time for me to make a deposit of my knowledge. That’s why I need to find a secluded place to dive in and properly organize what I’ve learned from my travels in the last few years.”

She had already considered that someone would ask him this question and had thought of what to say in advance, so there was not a hint of panic.

Paul bristled, after a few more years of industrial and commercial development, Alda would not be very “secluded” anymore.

But of course he will not say it to drive people away.

He reminded, “Don’t lose sight of your job while you’re organizing your knowledge!”

Miss Scholar nodded, “Of course, Lord Gleeman. Actually, I was planning to become a teacher at the Vis Academy, but Lord Chief Steward arranged for me to take the position of advisor. But as a scholar, please don’t doubt my sense of responsibility.”

Paul didn’t really doubt Lardy, someone who could risk his life to save someone from a tiger’s mouth shouldn’t be bad in terms of morals, he thought.

Another question occurred to him, “Where do you live now?”

“The Council of State has arranged a place for me to stay in the dormitory next to the lord’s mansion, and I’m very satisfied with the environment there.”

“Well, that’s good. By the way, Miss Ladi, that Miss Diaz that you saved last time is also working as an advisor for me, so now that you’re colleagues, you can communicate more when you have time?”

“Yes?” This was unexpected, but it was good to find another scholar here, perhaps she could exchange new knowledge from her.

“Lord Graiman, if there is nothing else, I will take my leave, Chief Ford is still waiting for one of my reports.”

Unexpectedly Paul called her back, “Ah, don’t be in a hurry just yet, Ms. Lardy.”

She asked, “Is there anything else Lord Graiman wants?”

Paul crossed his arms on the table, put on a solemn expression, and asked, “Miss La Di has traveled to many countries with the Lichtman Adventure Group over the years, right?”

Miss Scholar nodded.

Paul continued to ask, “Then there is also a basic understanding of the situation in each country, right?”

Lardy said, “Generally, I have a superficial knowledge of all but the southern countries.”

Paul asked, “Do you know anything about the laws of the countries?”

La Di nodded, “Before an adventurer goes to an unfamiliar country, he is bound to know all the laws of the country so as not to get into unnecessary trouble.”

“Really? That would be great.”

Paul hammered his hand, looking like he had picked up a treasure.

“I’m brewing a series of reforms for the territory, during which a lot of laws will inevitably be introduced. In order to avoid making frequent changes and not stepping into the pits that previous generations have stepped into, I plan to carefully refer to the legal provisions used in the history and present time of various countries. Since you know the laws of quite a few countries and are also a history scholar, I think you will be able to help me a lot in this regard.”

Lardy breathed a light sigh of relief and said, “Lord Greymane is flattered, and I am honored to offer you a hand in what I can.”

Paul said happily, “Then it is agreed, I will have an office packed for you within the castle in case I need to consult at any time.”

Lardy nodded and said, “At your service, my lord.”

Paul was about to let her back in when he suddenly got playful.

He put on a serious expression and said, “Actually, I’ve got some ideas in my head, so I’ll tell you about them now, and then you go and put together a draft for me, and submit it to the Council of State for discussion tomorrow.”

An assignment so soon? Without hesitation, Lardy responded, “Please go ahead, Lord Lord.”

She concentrated, paying attention to the ideas Paul had to say.

Paul stood up at once and said, “These days, the hearts and minds of the people are not what they used to be, and the world has lost many of its precious traditions.” With a pained look on his face, he waved his hand and said, “So I’m going to force the restoration of some old and valuable traditions by law?”

“Uh-huh!” Miss Scholar was very agreeable to Paul’s view, “Lord Gleeman, which traditions are you going to restore?”

Paul hammered the table and exclaimed, “I’ve decided to start with that!”

That thing? What exactly is that thing? Not only Miss Scholar, even Bernard straightened his neck and silently waited for Lord Lord’s following.

Paul raised his head at 45 degrees and said in a tone of righteousness:
“I have decided to restore the legendary Lord’s first – night – rights first! Miss Lardy you go and help me draft a decree.”

At these words, the large office was instantly plunged into silence.

Bernard was stupefied while Miss Scholar was filled with black lines.

“Pfft!” Finally, the silence was broken by a snort from Bernard, who then covered his mouth.

“Count Paul Greiman!”

Only a strong color of shame and indignation appeared in the scholar lady’s eyes, and her face was as red as a ripe apple.

Although she knew that the other party was joking, this was too much.

“Molesting a woman in broad daylight is not what a qualified noble does!”

How could he be like this when he himself had such a favorable impression of him ever since that conversation under the moon?

The more Lardy thought about it, the more irritated she became, and with a red face, she said, “Please, Your Excellency, transfer me to teach at the Vess Academy, I’m sure it would suit me better.”

“Hahaha! It’s just a joke, don’t be so serious.”

Seeing Miss Scholar so serious, Paul instead felt amused.

“This joke is too bad, please don’t do it again.”

Lardy didn’t insist on the idea of teaching at the academy, and sort of just let it go, after all, the other party was really joking.

She pleaded with Paul, “If there’s nothing else, I’ll take my leave.”

“Okay, okay, but the legal side of things is something that I really need your help with, and the next time I call on you it will be for real business.”

I was going to make a few more jokes, but it looked like with his control of humor, if he said any more he figured the other person would just walk away, and then he would have lost a rare talent.

After Miss Scholar left, Bernard, the chief secretary who remained in the office, said, “Lord Gleeman, today I can be considered to have seen a you who is very different from the past.”

Paul shrugged, “What? Am I that stereotypical on a normal day? Well, talk about something else, I see you’ve got your notebook clipped, is something up?”

Bernard flipped the notebook open and looked at it, “Something indeed, Earl Kent of Emden arrived in Lakewood yesterday evening and requested a meeting with you.”

Paul was stunned, “Earl Kent of Emden? I don’t have much to do with him, do I?”

In fact, it’s not that we haven’t crossed paths, when the pirates invaded, Chief Ford wrote a letter of request to Kent, but the other party asked Alda to attach themselves to him, and then left it unsettled.

Later on, the intelligence chief Hansel caught a few spies who were secretly prying into the secret recipe of papermaking, and after interrogation, they were actually sent by the Earl of Kent.

In short, Paul had no good impression of him.

He instructed Bernard: “Arrange a time for me to meet this messenger.”

I’ve coded a chapter out of the blue, so I’ll upload it first, but I can’t really do more tomorrow morning, it’ll be after noon at the earliest.

Thank you for the reward from the “Purple Fan Kui”.
