585. The rights of the casters
Chapter 585 The Rights of Spellcasters
Nathan sat on the second floor of the tavern, looking at the crowd gathered below. With him was Sita, who had huge chains wrapped around her body.
The crowd outside the tavern seemed to have filled the entire street, bustling as if it were some sort of celebration. In the distance, a court official from the Kingdom of Eton climbed up onto a high platform, unrolled a roll of parchment, and opened his mouth to read out its contents.
Nathan and Sita were far enough away from the official to hear what he was saying, but judging from his exaggerated body movements, the official was shouting at the top of his lungs.
The people surrounding the official showed expressions of surprise, and then discussed among themselves, and as they did so, the news began to spread in all directions, their movements forming a ripple that spread from far to near towards the tavern where Nathan was.
The murmur of chatter finally reached Nathan and Sita’s ears.
“A sorcerer? A sorcerer?” “The Archduke has recognized the legitimacy of witches?”
“Could it be that witches really exist? “”Nonsense, if witches don’t exist, is the Church dealing with air these past few years?””
“I heard the gossip in the tavern just the other day ……”
Nathan and Sita of course until what the official had just read to the populace. The Grand Duke’s edict began with a bitter denunciation of the Church’s oppression of the Horned Bay nations, which had caused untold loss of life and property, and had ultimately forced the coastal nations to fight back by force, while the Church armies’ unethical and despicable act of attacking on borrowed roads had put Eton in a dangerous situation, and in order to safeguard the lives and property of the people of Eton, he had been forced to accept the casters’ help, and then vocally praised the casters’ role in fighting against the Thanks to the decisive role played by the Church’s army, the lives and properties of the people of Eton were saved thanks to their fight, and all the people of Eton should be grateful to the casters for their help. In order to thank the casters for their great contribution to Eton, the Grand Duke announced that the previous misunderstandings and prejudices would be abandoned, and that all casters in Eton who obeyed the law would be granted the status of normal human beings, enjoying all the rights under the protection of the laws of Eton like everyone else.
Naturally, the contents of the edict caused an immediate uproar as soon as it was announced, with the populace discussing it with all sorts of voices. Yet after only half a day, the crowd on the streets dispersed in twos and threes.
“It seems to have gone much smoother than we expected.” Sita, who had been silent, said, “I thought it would cause a massive riot or something on the spot.” This guy in chains just kept standing by the window, expressionlessly watching the movements on the street.
Nathan picked up his glass and gulped down several large gulps of beer, wiping his mouth with his sleeve, “Isn’t this great? Mortals may be foolish, but they know the basics of good and bad, don’t they, and isn’t it clear what choices to make as to who attacked them and who protected them?”
“And …… the Grand Duke played a bit of tactics, in a week ago to recognize the legal status of spellcasters quietly spread in the folk, the streets and alleys, taverns and inns, has long been quietly discussed for a long time, but the official just did not have any indication. After brewing for so many days before suddenly making an official announcement, the populace has actually been psychologically prepared for it for a long time.”
“Now that the first country has stepped forward, let’s see how much of an impact it can have on the world. Uh …… Right, Nathan. “Sita suddenly asked, “Where’s Ms. Mariana? Why haven’t I seen her today.”
“Ahhh, just drinking.” Nathan scratched his head in embarrassment, “I received a message from Gabella yesterday, and departed back urgently during the night, I should have told you as soon as we met.”
“A message from Gabella?” Sita was startled, the chains on his body clattered, “Could it be that something big has happened on His Highness’s side?”
“Even I wasn’t told, maybe.” Nathan spread his hands, “Do you think it could be that the two princes are about to have a showdown? That would be something big to watch.” “If that’s the case.” A trace of regret appeared on Sita’s face, “Not being able to personally contribute by His Highness’ side and witness that great moment is truly heartbreaking.”
“Hahaha!” Nathan laughed as he looked out the window at the no-longer-crowded receiving streets, “It doesn’t matter to me, it’s the same everywhere. Isn’t it a huge contribution for us to nail the power of the Church here?”
Sita’s face regained its usual expression and nodded, “You’re right, I was too narrow-minded.”
—
Inside the golden-domed sanctuary of the Holy Capital of Light, an aura so dull that it made people irritable filled the place.
Pope Harrington II was sitting around a conference table with all the higher-ups of the Holy See, discussing the latest situation in Horn Bay.
“That fool Elvis, messing up Horned Bay, messing up is just fine, he could have wiped his own ass clean, and now he’s shyly approaching us for help.”
Tulls, the head of the Inquisition, was cursing Elvis, the bishop of the Church of Horned Bay, slapping the other party’s handwritten new towards the table, the polluting obscenities in his mouth made people wonder if he was a senior cleric.
Harrington Twenty frowned tightly, the Holy See from the beginning did not support or even vaguely opposed to the witch hunt movement that the Church of Horned Cove had engaged in, and now it had finally been kidnapped. Undoubtedly, in the eyes of the Holy See, the so-called “Protestantism” that the coastal countries of the Gulf of Horns have created is an unadulterated heresy, but by whom was this heresy spawned.
After Tulls’ venting came to an end, he slowly said: “Now accusations and insults can no longer solve the problem, the Horned Bay Church has suffered a huge defeat on two fronts, the heretic army is advancing towards the Church’s headquarters in Collins, should we sit back and watch them bear the consequences, or should we take action to save them.”
“Send an army to help them now!” “Let them fend for themselves before we destroy the heretics!”
Two voices rang out almost simultaneously. There was nothing to say about the Protestant heretics, of course they should be destroyed, but the timing of the strike was divided amongst the higher echelons of the Holy See present.
The two sides argued, causing Pope Harrington II a great headache, and he asked a young cleric seated beside him in a low voice.
“What do you think, Anthony?” Perhaps this young man could give him something different.
“All I can say, Coroner, is ……” replied the young cleric, “If my house were on fire, I would do my best to put it out before the flames spread throughout the house.”
