Chapter 436.
Chapter 436 Planting the Spoils
As it passed Lister, the carriage slowly dropped its speed, probably to rest in front of it.
Lister glanced at the harness and was not very surprised.
The other saw him too.
“Cable, I didn’t expect to meet you here.”
The halted harnessman called to him distantly, “Mr. Lister, I didn’t expect to meet you on the road either.”
Lister steered his horse to the wagon.
“What’s the matter, are you on some important errand? In such a hurry to get on the road?”
“I …… uh, my mother and I are planning to visit relatives in the Horned Cove Confederacy.”
Cable’s eyes wandered as he said this, and there was panic on his face.
Lister, who had experienced countless business negotiations, could tell at a glance that he was lying.
However, he didn’t intend to break it down, “Great, we happen to be on our way. In that case, your mother has returned home safely, congratulations.”
“Yes, thanks.”
Cable then remembered his mother in the carriage, and he opened the door to help an older woman inside down.
“Mom, let’s rest here for a while. Let me introduce you, this is a friend I just met a little while ago – Mr. Friedrich Lister, he’s from Aldo.”
“Ugh, Cable, you’re really going to turn my organs upside down. Greetings, this gentleman from Aldo.”
Lister curtsied, “Greetings, ma’am, it is a pleasure to meet you, and congratulations on clearing your name.”
The old woman waved her hand, “Alas, well what, just out of the lion’s blood, and into the hyena’s den.”
“Mom!” Cable raised his voice to stop him.
The old woman seemed to realize her gaffe and immediately kept quiet.
“What happened, can you tell me about it?”
Although he didn’t want to poke at Cable for lying just now, but after hearing the old woman’s words if he then acted as if he hadn’t heard it backfired and it would seem like he didn’t care about this new friend at all, so he still asked.
“Alas, this thing how should I say it …… I, I can’t say it now, wait until we get to the Horned Bay Alliance then say it can? “
Lister nodded, “Well, Cable, I won’t force my friends to do things they don’t want to do. But although we haven’t known each other for a long time, if you have any difficulties you can ask, I will help you within my ability.”
Cable said gratefully, “Thank you, my friend.”
With that, Lister traveled with Cable and his mother to the Horned Cove Alliance.
……
Cable still remembers the sheriff’s coldly repugnant expression.
The other man sat in front of his wide desk, expressionless, and replied to him in that formulaic tone and vocabulary.
“I am sorry, Mr. Cable, that you have lost a good teacher, and that His Majesty has lost a good subject. But that doesn’t change the facts.”
Cable forced back his anger, “What are the facts? I don’t even recognize what is now called ‘facts’, that’s what you ……” he paused for a moment, “That’s a shameful rumor fabricated by certain people with evil intentions. ”
The sheriff, still wearing a poker face, unconcerned with Cable’s anger, said blandly, “The fact is that your teacher – Viscount Degou Brar – died because of a ruptured bladder. ”
“I don’t accept that ……,” Cable interrupted the magistrate.
“Shall I make it any clearer? He was pissed on!” The sheriff suddenly drew up his pitch and grabbed back the reigns of the conversation in a tone that bordered on a low growl.
Cable retorted excitedly, “That’s impossible, how could a large living man be suffocated by urine! My teacher was a nobleman, His Majesty the King’s royal astrologer, he couldn’t have died in such a dishonorable manner.”
“That’s just the way it is, even the royal family accepts that.”
The magistrate spread his hands as if he was “helpless”, a gesture that changed his poker face a bit. “There must be a conspiracy in this!”
Cable was relentless in his pursuit, “Everyone knows that my teacher is an anti-war activist who has been using his influence in front of His Majesty to stop the country from sliding into the abyss, so he’s met with the cynicism of those high and mighty madmen, and they can’t be ruled out ……”
The sheriff’s eyelids fluttered as he held out a finger to Cable and spoke in a slightly faster tone:
“You can be responsible for what you say, what do you mean by loonies in high places. Don’t blame me for not reminding you, Mr. Cable, remember who you are, a trainee astrologer from a commoner’s background who has yet to make his mark. Do you think that after a few years of studying at the side of a Viscount, you’ll be able to blend in with the kingdom’s top circles and take part in the games of the greats? Can you talk about conspiracies, justice, and the like? Little do you know that in the eyes of certain people, you are still an ant that can be trampled on at will.”
This seemed to be a blow to Cable’s head.
He stood there frozen, his facial expression undulating with fear, exasperation, and shame.
Finally, he took a deep breath.
“Despite this, I still insist on a re-investigation of my teacher’s death, and I know several alchemists whom I would like to ask to check if my teacher’s corpse contains any toxic substances. Viscount Drac-Blar had no relatives, and as his only student, I think I have the authority to do so.”
His teacher’s body was still in the city guard’s morgue, and perhaps because of the great doubt about the cause of his death, or perhaps because of the almost humiliating description of him by the magistrate, he made up his mind anyway.
“All right! I grant your request.”
The sheriff sighed, “But, young man, don’t blame me for not warning you that a moment of anger and immature impulses can ruin you.”
After that Cable went home, to think over his choice of Alchemist to help him launch an independent investigation.
After he had made up his mind, he was about to leave the house again when he noticed the small note that had fallen out of the doorway.
It had only a short line on it, “Leave Collins immediately!” It was still written in red ink.
A handful of words poured over him like a pot of cold water, and a great sense of crisis gripped his whole body.
In fact, after leaving from the sheriff’s office, he kind of regretted his impulse.
There was still his old mother at home who had just been released, so even if he didn’t think of himself, he had to think of her.
This time Cable didn’t have the slightest hesitation, immediately packed up the necessary luggage and belongings, and in his mother’s puzzled eyes took her in a carriage and sped towards the outskirts of the city.
Then came the scene of meeting with Lister on the road.
……
After a dusty drive, Lister and Cable finally arrived within the sphere of influence of the Horned Bay Alliance.
Lister sent down Cable with an obvious sigh of relief.
“My friend, can you tell me what happened now?”
“Well, Mr. Lister, I confess to you.”
Cable confided to this friend, whom he had not long known, all that had happened at Collins.
He was a little ashamed in his heart, for before breaking away from Collins he had been really afraid that Lister, after hearing what had happened to him, would immediately shoot back to Collins to divulge his whereabouts to certain people.
After all, having only known each other for a few days, who knows if he would do that?
“So that’s how it is, don’t feel ashamed my friend, if it were me, I would also be so vigilant, even if it’s not for my own sake, it’s for the sake of the loved ones around me.”
Lister comforted him thus. “Once again, I extend my sympathies to your mentor.”
After entering the zone controlled by the Horned Bay Alliance, the two arrived at Fort Ness in a hurry.
With Lister’s help, Cable and his mother settled down temporarily.
Within a few days, they adventurers and merchants learned of the news from Collins.
The court astrologer of Collins had been murdered by none other than his student, and the cause was that the student had coveted his mentor’s years of stargazing records, and, failing to demand them, had committed such a horrible crime.
