Chapter 376 – Seeing the Road
“My life!”
In a store with red lights and sound music, the young man sat disheveledly on the sofa, his right hand feebly holding a wine glass, a tersely sigh of near despair escaping from his mouth.
Opposite him, a man slightly older than him was putting his arm around a heavily made-up woman, saying non-vegetarian jokes over and over again in broken Kakwanese, with the woman letting out a burst of laughter in agreement from time to time.
It was none other than Friedrich Lister and his companion McKinley.
Last night, people from the church had raided the inn where they were staying, searching from room to room for the so-called witches and wizards, stirring up a lot of trouble.
McKinley knocked on Lister’s door in the morning and found him a little delirious, mumbling something about women and antidotes over and over again.
Lister and he detailed the events of the night.
McKinley sympathized with him on the surface, but in the bottom of his heart, he thought that this kid was probably having some kind of a wet dream.
Strip naked? Normal. Dagger to the neck? Tastes kinda heavy.
Take him to Flower Street for a break, and when you get back, get reimbursed by Todd’s boss under the guise of treating your business associates to dinner, haha.
And so came the present scene.
“My life ah! It’s just about to start and it’s about to end!”
After a few glasses of wine, it instead made Lister more and more sad, and now his whole body was radiating negative energy.
“Guest ……”
Like McKinley, there was a flamboyant woman sitting beside Lister, who was now awkwardly smiling.
She hadn’t cheered up this long-winded guest even after trying her best, and a sense of frustration could not be avoided in her heart.
She couldn’t understand the Aldorian language the guest was muttering to himself.
“Lister, you really are!”
Across the room, McKinley couldn’t look away.
“How can you treat the beautiful lady next to you like that?”
As he said this, he threw a “wink” at the woman next to Lister, causing her to laugh.
“Well, don’t feel sorry for yourself over your wet dream, look at the beauty of reality more often!”
Lister held his head and said dejectedly, “I’m not kidding you, if I don’t ask that woman for the antidote, I’ll really have to bury my bones in another country!”
McKinley snorted, “You’re so dreamy that you can’t tell the difference between fantasy and reality! I checked with the valet, and as of the time I got to your room, I haven’t seen any women come in or out of the hotel at all!”
“Ah!” Lister’s eyes widened, “I told you, that woman is a magic ……”
“Shhh!” McKinley hastily covered his mouth, “Don’t mention that word, although I don’t know how sensitive this place is to witchcraft, but we’d better be careful!”
He glanced at the two accompanying ladies, both of whom looked unchanged and were relieved to make sure they didn’t understand their Aldo.
“You don’t really believe that there is any magic …… that what? I think it’s just the gangsters who defected to the church trying to find an excuse to extort some oil on us outsiders!”
Lister had a stony face and whispered, “Whether you believe it or not, anyway, a woman inexplicably appeared in my room last night, and I’m sure that the church’s actions are 100% related to her!”
Seeing Lister repeating it again and again, McKinley’s heart was a little shaken, could he be telling the truth?
The sound of clattering cups and plates breaking suddenly came, destroying the warbling atmosphere of the store.
Everyone in the room looked toward the source of the sound.
Only to see that a table had been overturned there, with a drunken man beside him in a drunken frenzy.
He was holding a glass of wine in one hand, while the other hand was holding a woman by the collar.
“Drink! Drink for me if I let you!”
There were several other men beside him who were coaxing, looking lewdly at the woman’s body.
The poor woman seemed to have become a bit delirious, but still held out her hands and kept pushing back. “What? Not giving face!”
The abuser pushed the woman onto the couch and yelled as he grabbed her by the hair again, “I spent all that money, so you have to do whatever I tell you to do!”
The woman was torn by his hair and screamed in pain, while the people next to her laughed.
Such a scene happened in front of their eyes, but no one in the lobby went forward to stop, a few people sighed and left, out of sight, out of mind.
“Outrageous!”
Lister was about to go over to him, but was held back by his companion McKinley.
McKinley asked the two chaperones in Hornblower, “What are the identities of those people?”
The two escorts looked at what had happened to their sisters, their bodies trembling, but their faces were at a loss.
Hearing McKinley’s question, one of them said, “Guest, don’t mess with them. Those people are all members of the church’s subordinate purification team.”
Purification Team? Both Lister and McKinley frowned, hearing the name of this organization for the second time.
“Is it the Purification Squad that conducts witch hunting campaigns?”
“Yes.” The other escort said fearfully, “If you mess with them, you might become a suspect in their mouth! To …… be burned at the stake.”
Lister and McKinley were very surprised, even though they knew that there were witch hunts on this side of Horn Bay, they still thought that last night’s incident was just a small probability, but from the mouth of the two chaperones, they could conclude that the witch hunt movement seemed to have become very widespread, especially in terms of its impact on civilian life.
McKinley sighed, “I hadn’t come across it the last time I came to Nisborough, and I didn’t realize that it had only been a few months ……”
He tightly tugged on Lister’s sleeve, “Don’t be impulsive, do you want to seek death?” This guy even wanted to go over to dispense justice, drinking to his head?
“Let go of me!” Liszt had a sad face, “I won’t be able to get the antidote anyway, so why don’t you let me give my life for justice with a bang!”
With a sudden push, he broke away from McKinley’s hand and sprinted to the abuser’s side, fearlessly shouting at the other party, who was a head taller than him, “Are you still considered a man! How dare you bully a woman?”
The other man stopped his torment of the woman – her face was bruised and purple, no longer recognizable as it had been – and turned to glare at Lister, a fierce look that jolted him and scared him out of his drink for a few moments.
A gruff voice reached his ears, “What were you yakking about, you foreign ruddy bastard?”
Just now, in righteous anger, Liszt used the Aldo language.
“I …… I said …… you …… you as a man can’t …… can’t behave like that towards women.”
Lister switched to the Horned Bay language, stuttering out these words because of his lack of proficiency and the fact that his aura had been suppressed.
The other customers in the lobby looked at this foreigner who couldn’t even speak properly with shocked eyes, some admiring, some ashamed, some disdainful, and some feeling that things were about to get out of hand to hurry up and bolt.
“Hahaha!”
After a short period of shock, the abuser’s accomplices erupted into a burst of laughter.
“Quintus! You are despised by this Aldoan!”
“Quickly let this Yankee teach Quintus how to be a gentleman.”
“I love to see a hero saving a woman’s life.”
The banter of his associates caused the abuser known as Quintus to turn red in the face, and it was obvious that he was not happy.
Quintus swung his fist, “Aldo boy, it looks like I’m going to have to teach you how to follow the rules – Master Quintus’ rules!”
Then with a clenched fist, his knuckles crunched.
Lister gulped, the wine all sobered up, and he realized that he was a bit too impulsive.
McKinley, run yourself.
