Chapter 149 – Plugging the Nail

Chapter 149 – Plugging the Nail

The crowd deliberated in the office for most of the day before dispersing.

Just as Paul wanted to lie down on his desk and take a nap, the office door slammed again.

“Come in.”

The door opened, only to see that outside was Cecil, the intelligence chief, who sneaked inside and carefully closed the door.

“Cecil? Why are you being so mysterious? Sit down first.”

Cecil came to the front of his desk and sat down after owing slightly, lowering his voice:

“Lord Graiman, I suddenly thought of something on my way back, so I came back to you again.”

“What is it?”

“It’s this ……”

He straightened himself and spoke, “Miss Ladi being here is always a danger to us.”

“What? Are you out of your mind, she just saved me and one of the guards, do we have to look at her with colored glasses just because she’s a witch? Besides you’ve seen how she is on a regular basis.”

The Minister of Intelligence explained with a slight blush, “I’m sorry, what I just said might have been a bit ambiguous.”

“What I meant to say is that given the public’s perception of witches and the Church’s hostility towards them, it would be very bad for us if someone else found out that we’re harboring a witch here and then stabbed the Church about it.”

Paul helplessly spread his hands, “You’re right, this also occurred to me. But what’s the solution? Are you going to let me drive her away, drive away someone who has fought alongside me?”

Cecil quickly waved his hand, “No, no, I don’t mean that.”

“Then what exactly are you trying to say?”

Cecil lowered his already low voice, “An opportunity, a chance to lessen the threat from that side of the Church.”

Paul became interested at that, he stared into Cecil’s eyes, “Speak! Don’t hide it.”

“You know what? His Grace, the Bishop of the Northwest Bay Diocese, is about to step down from his position as Bishop due to health reasons.”

“Is that so? That’s something I hadn’t heard, but does it have anything to do with us?”

“Who do you suppose is the person who will take over the bishop’s seat?”

“Who is it?”

“It’s the old abbot of that monastery near our town!”

Paul was a little surprised, “Abbot Leonard?”

“Hey, hey, that’s exactly him! The old king had made an agreement with the Holy See at that time, that bishops within Aldo had priority in appointing people from their own country, so this time, Abbot Leonard was chosen, the old abbot’s faith is very pious and loyal enough to the kingdom, so both sides kinda liked him.”

“Well, I’m aware of this agreement, but what does it have to do with us?”

Cecil revealed a wry smile, “My lord listen to me slowly. Once Abbot Leonard left, wasn’t the abbot’s seat of that abbey vacant? And I poked around a few days ago, the old abbot is planning to let Father Anderson from our town take over his abbot’s seat.”

“Father Anderson? Aside from feeling a bit nerdy, he’s a nice guy, and I heard that he came from that monastery, so it would make sense for him to go back as abbot.”

“But I’ve heard he’s been in a super bad mood lately, and he’s been in church every day for a long time.”

“Huh? Why? That’s a promotion, shouldn’t he be happy?”

“Your Excellency doesn’t know, this person, Father Anderson, has a little hobby on weekdays besides chanting and praying.”

“I know, doesn’t he like to study various plants and small animals? The church’s yard is all planted with flowers and plants.” “Exactly, he spends most of his time on that every day besides doing what a priest must do.”

“I heard he’s a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Clear? That’s not surprising, I get the feeling that this group is more like a bunch of scholars.”

“So think about it, once he takes over the abbot’s position and manages such a large abbey, there must be a lot of things to do every day, will he still have time for his hobbies? That’s why he’s always moping these days, but he doesn’t dare to disobey his teacher’s orders.”

“I sympathize with him, then? “

Cecil burst into a strange laugh, “And then our chance comes. I see that Father Morrison is idle every day, why don’t we get him to help Father Anderson?”

Morrison, the priest that Paul had met in the church in Port Fullan when he recaptured it, had been coerced into joining the Sharks by the Sharks, and Paul had used it to blackmail him into working for him.

After returning to Lakewood, Morrison was appointed as the director of Wise College, and also managed several “propaganda teams”, and often went to the barracks to listen to the soldiers’ confessions, and in the meantime, filled their brains with the ‘private goods’ that Paul had entrusted to him.

In fact, it is not too idle, but Paul immediately understood the meaning of Cecil’s words.

He shook the intelligence chief’s hands at once, flattering Cecil.

“All this time, I’ve been waiting for an opportunity!”

Paul stared at Cecil with two glittering eyes, “Now that opportunity has been sought by you, Cecil, you are truly my right-hand man.”

Cecil, however, broke out in a cold sweat all of a sudden, “That …… Count Lord. This matter is not yet certain to be accomplished, if it doesn’t work ……”

The greater the hope, the greater the disappointment, in case it doesn’t work out, Lord Earl can’t be angry with him.

“No!” Paul pounded the table, and scared the intelligence director.

“This matter must succeed, once in a lifetime, I will go to the church to ‘visit’ Father Anderson.”

……

Inside the church in Lakewood, Anderson looked sadly at a field of flowers.

In a few days he would be going to the nearby monastery as the abbot, who would take care of these flowers and plants of his, the new priest who came over to take over this church wouldn’t have shoveled them all.

He sincerely prayed to the gods, “O omnipotent Lord, please grant me a way to have the best of both worlds, that is, not to defy my teacher’s appointment, but also to allow me to continue to take care of these lovely and beautiful creatures.”

“Father Anderson!”

Just as he was finishing his prayers, he suddenly heard his name called out from outside the gates of the churchyard.

“That voice? It’s Count Greiman.”

His Lordship could not afford to be slow, and he immediately straightened his clothes and respectfully walked towards the door.

Before he could reach the door, Paul entered.

“Haha, Father Anderson! It’s really a long time since I’ve greeted you. Speaking of which, I haven’t made a special trip to find you to say thank you since I was saved and woken up by you. I’m really sorry!”

Mr. Priest waved his hands repeatedly, “No, no, no! Although I’m not a healer, saving the dead and helping the injured is also one of the responsibilities of being a servant of God.”

“Bring it here!”

Paul reached out his hand, and the guard next to him immediately handed him a wooden box.

“As compensation, I sincerely want to give you a gift!”

He patted the box with a sincere smile on his face.
