“Ah.”
A low moan resounded from the tent as Maxim, who had been unconscious for an entire day, finally opened his eyes after the constantly intertwining nightmares receded.
The loyal servant’s body was covered in sweat and even soaked through the linen clothes that lined it, but the wounds that should have existed on his body had healed a lot as he awoke to consciousness.
At the very least, it would no longer affect his movements.
This abnormal self-healing came from the fact that the body that had been mastered to the finest detail after the completion of the Black Iron Trial had begun to release its hidden potential, allowing this body of a thousand hammers to truly shed its mediocrity and begin to step into the ranks of transcendent power.
For a warrior, this was only the most insignificant of changes.
The entire Black Iron Rank experience is about the release of individual potential, and after all the potential belonging to an individual has been tapped, it is only natural that he will enter the trial of strength of the Silver Body.
There were naturally new and more difficult goals to achieve at the next stage, but that wasn’t something a Black Iron ranked warrior needed to consider.
The system of power summarized by the elves wasn’t just some random cool and middle-of-the-road name, there were things that had to be accomplished at each stage.
“Looks like you recovered well.”
Just as Maxim sat up his body from the bed, Murphy’s voice suddenly came out from the shadows of the tent, causing the loyal servant to immediately get up.
But as a sharp blade broke the wind, a refined, sturdy, spiritually-hardened and ebony-accented Grave Ceremony Black Blade was handed to him.
Maxim’s eyes narrowed.
He immediately recognized the black blade as Jade’s sword, with Jade’s personal emblem on the hilt, so it could be called “Jade’s Blade” for the time being.
But the sword was now in Lord Murphy’s hands, so…
“I made a deal with Jed, Mark, though the process was not ‘pleasant’.”
Murphy’s figure stepped out of the parting of the shadows, and he spoke to Maxim in a gentle tone:
“From now on, you don’t have to be bothered by the entanglements of the past, and can finally welcome a new and unencumbered life with open arms.
I should congratulate you, Loyalist.”
“I feel joy for that as well, Lord Murphy, and likewise congratulate you on your glorious victory!”
Maxim took the ceremonial black blade that was exclusive to the Catacomb Sword Guard with an open heart and no mental burden, what he should have returned to Jed had long since been cleared.
He looked to Lord Murphy, who wore a graceful smile and comportment in front of him, and then he was able to read from the change in the Lord’s aura that Murphy had also just gone through the same trial as him and won the battle.
Coupled with the relic belonging to Jed in his hand, it was easy to tell who Lord Murphy had chosen as the target for his trial of strength.
Worthy of being Lord Murphy!
Maxim marveled in his heart, actually using a silver ranked enemy as a stepping stone to log into a new realm, compared to him, the little victory he had achieved was nothing compared to him.
“Perhaps it’s also time to fulfill my promise to you.”
Murphy, who was standing in the Shadow Divider, looked at that [1/3] Blood Contract number expansion on his character card and said to Maxim:
“I have acquired new powers that can transform you into a midnight being like me and lead you to step into the middle of eternity. But I wish you to wait a little longer, Mark.
The weakness of the bloodline originating from Tris has still not been properly addressed.
But I think that after we set foot in the Blood Wyvern Cloisters and completely resolve those hidden dangers of the darkness, this trivial problem will be resolved as well.”
He paused and spoke in an aggravated tone to the silent Maxim:
“I want the best for you, and you deserve the best for what you have done!”
“Of course, my lord, I submit to your will.”
Maxim bent down, and he said in a deep voice:
“I have long entrusted my soul, personality and will to you, and my fate shall be ruled by you, and all I need to do is to keep swinging my sword for you and cut down the enemies that stand in the way of your great endeavors.
That is all.”
“I have no doubt about that.”
Murphy smiled and said with his hands behind his back to the loyal servant in front of him whom he trusted second only to Tris:
“Now, get dressed and come with me to the city.
I’m going to make my own grave insignia, and you’re going to assist in understanding the process from the sidelines. That way, when you complete your first embrace and become one of us, you too will have immediate access to the power of that midnight boon.”
“It would be an honor, my lord.”
Maxim smiled in the darkness.
Immediately after Murphy left, he got up and changed out of his soaked linen robes, moving nimbly to put on his lined gauntlets.
He was about to put on his already tattered chainmail armor when he noticed that a set of Catacomb Swordguard Combat Leather Armor, which had been cleaned, was laying on the table of the tent.
This was obviously Jed’s “legacy” as well.
It represented the high grade of psychic armor that the tailors and craftsmen of the Blood Vulture Clan could produce, and its luxurious and obscure Blood Vulture crest was all around the armor.
Only the clan leader’s own guards are qualified to wear such armor, and its very existence is a reward for loyalty.
Maxim moved his fingers and did not refuse the generosity from Lord Murphy.
He put on the gauntlet, took the vampire mask and put it on his face to hide his unusual face, hid himself under the black light armor, put on Jed’s ceremonial black blade, and finally put his own psionic venomous blade, “Ambition and Dreams”, on the other side of the belt of arms.
Maxim knew the technique of using two swords in the Blood Vulture Sword Art by heart.
“Not bad, already has a bit of a strong man’s demeanor.”
When the loyal servant stepped out of the tent, he received appreciation and affirmation from Murphy.
A low chuckle came out from underneath the face armor, Maxim said in a happy mood:
“Still no match for you, my lord, you have begun to transform from a gallant warrior to a great ruler, and this is by no means flattering.”
“I seriously doubt it was the potential of the tongue that the Black Iron Trials unleashed in you first, you weren’t this articulate before.”
Murphy rolled his eyes and waved his finger forward.
The master and servant then flew into the night and left the survivor camp that was still under curfew. Both of them had entered the Black Iron rank and moved much faster with the growth of their own power.
They arrived in the still ash covered ruins of Cadman City ten minutes later, slightly out of breath Maxim tilted his head in the direction of the inner city, after a few seconds he whispered in the dim night color:
“The obstruction there is gone, my lord, we can enter there now.”
“You can, but there’s no need.”
Murphy didn’t even look at the “new map” over there as he said:
“Let the witch hunters go in and explore.
We’ve got a lot to do in the next two days, and while I don’t want to discourage you, the fact remains that we’re once again on the brink of having to fight to stay alive.
Old troubles have just been solved and new ones are on their way.”
“But then isn’t that the norm in your rippling life? My lord.”
Maxim followed Murphy as he joked:
“Since I’ve known you, I haven’t had one of those wonderful experiences where I just win and survive, but that’s actually a good thing.
Where’s the power without the pressure?”
“That’s some optimism you have, can you tell me where you got it? I’d like to go weigh myself a few pounds too, so I don’t let the horrible stress destroy my precariously accumulated sanity.”
Murphy bristled. He walked through the ash-covered ruins of the city, the ebony stone gifted to him by Missy in hand using his more acute dark senses to find where the scent of death was coiled.
The word ‘grave’ was in the profession name of Grave Sword Guards, which fully proved that the power of this advanced profession came from death under midnight, so its transfer process would have to be completed in places that were strewn with the aura of death.
A profession rich in vampire obscurity, the transfer process alone was enough to seep in.
“Found it!”
A few minutes later, Murphy captured a place where the death aura was unusually concentrated.
It was even colder and more oozing than the cemetery outside the city, and it was right underneath Murphy and Maxim’s feet, or to be precise, deep into the darkness underneath the city.
In the middle of the sewers.
“My lord, this place is too filthy!”
Seeing that Murphy was about to jump down by lifting the manhole cover under his feet, Maxim immediately stepped forward to stop it:
“Even when the city was still around, the sewers were already famous for harboring filth, and it’s hard for me to imagine how many unspeakable human disasters have gathered in this hellhole after the disaster.
An honorable person like you should not set foot here, or should we go to the cemetery outside the city?
Or find a village that has died out?”
“Dignity is worthless in the face of strength, Mark, not to mention, time! We don’t have that much time to slowly pick our way through the fat.”
Murphy didn’t care about the filth of the sewers.
In fact, he could even guess that the environment of the sewers in Cadman City was not harsh, because as Maxim had said, even when the city still existed, the intricate sewer area had been a famous place to hide dirt.
Dark forces, large and small, operated in the sewers, and they molded underground nooks for themselves.
This meant that it wasn’t actually dirty there.
At most, it’s a bit buried.
Murphy had visited the underground black market, and Cadman City had many such places camped by underground gangs before, and those places were commonly located right in the sewers.
The vampires in the city were aware of the existence of the black market, but no one thought of outlawing them, and even the vampires had to go through the underground black market to get something to enjoy in life during the most difficult time of the war.
This was the territory of the Blood Vulture, and the original sin of the Blood Vulture was lust, from these two words one could imagine the extent to which these Descendants of Lust would go crazy when indulging themselves, and anyway, it was also fortunate that there was no belief in colorful sins in this world, otherwise the Blood Vulture vampires would definitely be the first batch of bastards to be corrupted.
Thinking about it, it seems that even Murphy feels that his own “compatriots” have a way of getting killed.
“Go!”
The vampire jumped lightly into the shaft leading to the sewers, followed by Maxim.
The two descended nearly five meters to land firmly in the dimly lit passageway, and were guided forward and backward by the scent of death toward the front where there was not a single speck of light.
“Pfft.”
Maxim pulled out the small gas blowtorch that housed the fire, and along the way set fire to those specially placed torches on the walls on either side of the ancient sewers.
They could still hear the sound made by the gurgling water as they walked through the narrow, dark place.
“The underground water system is still there, that’s good news.”
Murphy didn’t feel intimidated walking in the darkness instead he had a sense of reassurance, he ignored the bad smell around him and said to Maxim behind him who had his hand on the hilt of his sword vigilantly:
“Although both Tris and Missy have explained to me that the shadow of the Star Realm in the outer city is not enough to contaminate the groundwater, as the place of our future roots, it still makes me feel at ease to make sure my people don’t have to worry about getting water.”
“They should be grateful for your care.”
Maxim responded:
“I’ve never seen any honorable vampire worry about such trivial matters, and from this it proves that you will surely be a wise monarch, my lord.
You possess a kindness that none of the vampires possess, and that is truly a supreme virtue.”
“Well, I confirm now that it was indeed your clever tongue that first unlocked your potential, Maxim, perhaps I should give you the nickname ‘Mark of Coquettish Words’ once we have established our power.
In the ensuing decades, that nickname may well become a byword for sycophants exclusively in Transylvania.”
Murphy grunted, causing Maxim behind him to let out another low chuckle.
But then, as they crossed the narrow passageway into the place ahead where the scent of death gathered, Murphy and Maxim drew their weapons almost simultaneously.
In front of them was obviously a square three-dimensional space developed by manpower over a long period of time, similar to an “underground black market” in a large area, lying in a hundred corpses.
There were men and women who had died a miserable death.
There were even some teenage children.
They weren’t dressed like gangsters who would walk and gather in the sewers, they were just ordinary civilians who had taken refuge in the sewers after the disaster in Cadman City.
But they didn’t escape death.
“It’s the Despair Derivatives and the Astral Beasts, my lord.”
Maxim stepped forward to view the chewed up, grisly bodies of the few bodies that had crawled out at the very front, leaning on his psychic poisoned blade, he whispered:
“These people must have exuded too much despair in the darkness thus attracting those monsters, and this narrow place gives them nowhere to even run but here to welcome the desperate slaughter.
As for that beast . Maybe it was a crocodile? Or perhaps some amphibian.”
“It’s not here anymore.”
Murphy, whose vampire senses allowed him to pick up on more details in the darkness, said:
“Been away for at least three days, no presence of it within my senses, perhaps the fires that burned the ground earlier scared it off allowing it to hide deeper underground, or perhaps it has returned to the Astral Plane.”
His eyes swept over the corpses in the three-dimensional area in front of him, seeing the despair on the faces of the decaying corpses, and after a few seconds he shook his head:
“What a tragedy, we’re one step too late.”
“It is not your fault, my lord, you and your warriors have done well enough.”
Maxim immediately persuaded:
“They escaped into the sewers, which would have been difficult to find under the shadow of the Astral Plane.”
“No, Mark, I am not as vulnerable as you think.”
Murphy shook his head and said in a low tone:
“I’m wondering how many of these bodies are in the entire sewer? Three thousand? Five thousand? No. Originally, there were at least a hundred thousand people living in the outer city here, while we only rescued a thousand or so, excluding those unlucky people who were caught up in the Star Realm in huge numbers, the number of people who died in the sewers is definitely so high as to make you despair.
What I’m worried about now is that the fading of the Star Realm’s energy will bring back the psychic energy of this place, and the thought of the death monsters that so many tragic deaths can spawn here makes your scalp tingle just thinking about it.
Each one is a ghoul, and there are countless locations in Cadman City used by gangs to hide corpses for their crimes.”
He sighed and looked into the dark, maze-like underground tunnels in front of him.
Gripping the hilt of his sword, he said:
“A nest of ghouls and catacombs of grudges that encompasses the entire outer city is taking shape, and the number of ghouls alone can’t be conservatively estimated to be less than ten thousand .
I’m certain, Mark, that the sewers beneath our territory are definitely the largest and most terrifying nest of evil spirits that will ever form on this continent.
After that, ah, my warriors will probably have their hands full.”
