Murphy left the house.
He takes with him a vial of the Daylight Potion that Jed gave him, which is designed to inflict weakness on vampires, and swears an oath to join Jed’s group in his quest for the final power of the Blood Vulture Clan.
Jed doesn’t really trust him, however, and Murphy senses that the man is using him as a pawn, using his future power to compel him to betray his current friends.
It made perfect sense.
Especially in the traditional vampire society, being able to get one vampire to completely trust another vampire was something that was absolutely impossible to achieve.
What flowed through their veins was not something as lowly as blood, it was a highly poisonous substance formed by mixing intrigue and malice in proportion and fermenting through the darkness of the night.
When touched, one would die, and when one saw blood, one’s throat would be closed.
And tens of minutes after Murphy left, the door of the house was pushed open once again.
This time it was Maxim who walked in.
The latter had his hood over his eyes and face and was holding a bottle and seven goblets.
It wasn’t easy to find these flashy things in the current Cadman City, fortunately Lord Murphy’s warriors were talented enough at scavenging, and Miriam had stocked up on supplies there.
“Have a drink, my lord.”
Maxim poured the crimson liquid held in the bottle into a cup and handed it back to Jed, the frail vampire moved his throat and took it no longer able to maintain the false courtesy.
In this moment he tilted his head back like a vulgar glutton and drank the blood like a fine wine in one gulp.
“Mmm.”
The blood entered his mouth and transformed into real power into his parched body, causing Jade to let out a long moan, just like drinking jade syrup caused the aging and wrinkles on his face to flatten out as far as the eye could see.
Only that head of gray could never return to its original darkness.
Damage to the blood essence was not an injury that could be recovered from overnight for a vampire, much like men unfortunate enough to suffer from a kidney disease.
Urgency is not a solution to the problem!
This kind of injury to the essence has always had to be slowly recuperated.
“You did not tell Murphy about my long ago awakening, so it seems you remain loyal, Maxim.”
Jed whispered.
The voice was no longer as dry as before it seemed to take on the malice and gloom that a vampire should have, and Maxim with his head bowed did not answer, only poured him another cup of the sweet blood taken from the virgins of the camp as a servant would, and once again handed it to Jed with both hands.
“He trusts you.”
Jed was not as rude as he had been earlier this time.
He seemed to have regained the proper decorum of a midnight aristocrat, shaking the sweet thing gently in his hand, his eyes watching Maxim’s expression through the ripples of blood.
He said:
“He also told me about you, and wished me to pass you on to him; he really thinks highly of you.
And I
And I suddenly realized that I had looked away.
Just as I failed to discover Murphy’s hidden talent, I also failed to realize that there is actually an outstanding individual like you among my servants. So, Maxim, are you willing to follow Murphy?”
“I am your servant.”
Maxim said in a deep voice:
“I also owe you a life, an unforgettable favor that I must repay with this life!”
“Good!”
This answer satisfied Jed very much.
Maxim didn’t hide his admiration for Murphy and his willingness to follow him, but he was also honest in his thoughts, and the deeply human vampire knew that this kind of entanglement was the norm for a fragile creature like man.
The more determined or loyal Maxim was, the more skeptical he would feel.
“Then I need you to do one last thing for me, in the name of the Servant, which is a certain ritual that must be performed in order to gain your freedom.”
Jed took a small sip of blood as he snapped his fingers and a vial of déjà vu daytime potion fell into Maxim’s hand.
He said:
“Murphy is a brilliant scion, I’m guessing his flat out promise to work with me was just to stabilize me, he was expecting to get offers from both sides before waiting to sell.
That’s what I would have done if it was me.
But now the conditions don’t allow it anymore, I have to ‘help’ him make up his mind. You go and put this drug in Ms. Tris’ drink and hide her.
Don’t hurt her yet until it’s over.
I don’t need you to get involved in this, Maxim.
I just need Murphy to feel a little pressure, and after I’m done with him, you’ll get what you crave, and we, we’ll both get what we want.”
Maxim nodded.
Seemingly unable to understand, he finally opened his mouth and asked:
“My lord, you clearly have the advantage, Phimis is only alone, and she is only at the Black Iron rank, any one of your companions can take care of her.
Why do you still have to”
“This is not for you to know, Maxim, you are not one of us yet, the secrets belonging to the Darkness are not for humans to pry into!”
Jed glanced at the servant with a cold gesture.
The latter immediately bent down and retired, and before leaving, Maxim said to him:
“I am already selecting ‘food’ to your liking and will bring it to you first thing in the morning, so please bear with me for the time being.”
“Uh-huh.”
Jed watched Maxim leave, and after the room had once again returned to silence, he dragged his heavy body up to pick up the vial of blood that Maxim had brought, and picked through the dozen or so scions lying on the floor at the back of the room, eventually pouring the blood over one of the taller scions.
The latter soon awoke to the blood, and then Jed was heard whispering in the darkness:
“Arthur, my finest scion, go! Watch Maxim, with whom I remember you are well acquainted, and if he accomplishes what I have commanded him to do, it will be for you to take over the care of Mrs. Tris before he returns to me to resume his duties.
But if he does what he should not
Finish him!”
—
Maxim walked on the ash-covered ground of Cadman City.
He was chagrined that he was still too gung-ho to ask where Jed’s qualms about Miss Phymis stemmed from.
He didn’t believe for a moment that Jed’s decision to have Lord Murphy execute Missy was harmless in and of itself; the sly old thing must have wanted Lord Murphy to take the terrible blame for it.
Perhaps there were other, more dangerous factors.
He had to think of a way to get more for Lord Murphy in this unexpected matter.
Unhelpfully, this brain of his was really not suited for such thinking, and after just a few minutes of thinking it felt like his brain was going to explode, and it was at that moment that Maxim suddenly stopped then looked to his left and to his right.
He heard a very pretentious chirping sound and then realized that in the dark alley ahead, Lord Murphy’s warrior, Miss Yang Trace, was there gesturing at him to go over.
After making sure he wasn’t being followed, he quickly stepped forward.
“Jed demanded that I poison Lady Tris!”
He whispered to Sunstrike:
“Immediately tell this news to Lord Murphy, Jade is going to use Lady Cress to force his hand, Lady Cress must be moved immediately.”
“You’re exposing yourself if you do that!”
Lumina, who was as clever as she was, understood in a twinkling of her little head, and she whispered:
“I’m here to deliver Lord Murphy’s instructions, the Lord says he trusts all the judgment you’ve made, and tells you to move freely until it’s over, and not to contact him lest he drag you into danger.
He also said you don’t have to worry about Jed as long as you protect Mrs. Tris.
This is an opportunity just to take you out of the picture.”
Lumina, who quite admired the loyal Bloodservant warrior in front of her, said to Maxim:
“You should take advantage of the situation to bring Lord Murphy’s soft underbelly away from this vortex of family intrigue, and don’t let her fall into the hands of that Jed who doesn’t look like a good person at first glance.”
“That won’t be enough.”
Maxim shook his head:
“There is too much pressure on Lord Murphy, and Jed and his associates are so powerful that I must um, perhaps the unassuming you are better suited.
Ah, foolish me finally realizes what the Lord often means when he says he must learn to use your true power.”
He looked at Lumina Yang Trace in front of him, then handed over the vial of Daylight Potion that Jed had given him and whispered:
“Go to the survivor camp!
Dilute this with water and put it in the ‘food’ prepared for those vampires, but not too soon and not too late, they are wary. Gather the other warriors, there are 40 of you! You’re brave enough and not afraid to die, you should barely be able to hit those already weakened guys hard enough in an ambush.
Lord Murphy’s great work cannot be stopped!
Whether it’s a witch hunter or a vampire, finish them off if they dare to get in the way!” A fierce light flashed in Maxim’s bloodshot eyes as he spoke to Lumina in front of him:
“Go to my soldiers, open the armory we keep and take all the best weapons in it and arm yourselves, if you win those finely crafted weapons and armor will be yours!
Lady Tris will be under my guard.
She will not be harmed, I will give my word of honor!
I have learned that I do not need Jed Kane to grant me anything!
I am a Transylvanian.
So the ones I want I will get for myself!”
“Ding!”
A quest prompt popped up on Lumina’s player interface at this moment:
[Group Quest ‘Loyal Fangs’ has been triggered (shareable)]
—
“Bang.”
The milky white daytime potion was placed on the corner of the table.
In the tower where Phimis had been hiding for the past few days, Murphy stared at Missy in front of him, who was still holding a book and reading with her back turned to him, as Lady Adele stood guard outside the passageway on the highest floor of the tower.
She knew she shouldn’t be involved in the conversation between the two inside.
She just needed to do what an heir and a housekeeper should do.
“You’ve kept a lot of things from me and Tris! You! Not honest at all.”
Murphy said nonchalantly to Femis:
“You confirmed a long time ago that your father wasn’t dead, didn’t you? You’re also well aware of what happened in the Blood Wyvern Cloisters, and if it weren’t for the unexpected appearance of Jed’s gang, I would have been kept in the dark by you.
I’m guessing you had to go to the Blood Wyvern Cloisters because the Shard of Desire that represents the position of Clan Chief is there, and if you can get that tablet you can rebuild the Clan!
All that talk about helping me build a new power and about only confirming the truth were all lies!
Maybe you and Jed are just along for the ride, and he really wasn’t wrong to call you ‘little bitch’ and ‘little poisonous bitch’.
Maybe the only reason you did your best to help me corral these survivors was so that you could convert them into a new batch of members of the clan when all was said and done.
Let me ask you, Phimis, is the Blood Wyvern Clan really that important to you?”
“Of course it’s important!”
No longer pretending to read, Femis dropped her book and turned her head, those bloodshot eyes staring at Murphy, taking a deep breath knowing that the showdown moment had come, she said in a deep voice:
“Family is important to every vampire! It’s only deviants like you and Tris who don’t care about the demise of their clan and are so focused on building a power that belongs only to you.
However, you have overlooked the fact that the world itself is malicious towards vampires, and only by embracing the group can we survive in the darkness of the night!
The Clan is the convergence of this philosophy of survival.
But you’re wrong, Murph.
I’m not sacrificing you and those poor people at the survivor camp, and I really only want to go to the Blood Wyvern Cloisters to find out what happened to me.
I know you’ve been speculating, so I’ll simply tell you!
I’m not a vampire! I am not a vampire!
At least not a normal vampire!
I couldn’t embrace Adele for the first time and I had to ask you for help, and I’m sure you’ve noticed this in your mind, and you’re just playing dumb like a wise old man waiting for this moment to blame me for all this, and justifiably chastise me for not being honest.
And yet, aren’t you hiding something from me just the same?
I don’t believe that a year-old fringe of the family would be transformed in a few days; you have secrets too! And your secrets are buried deeper than mine.
In your words, clear yourself of suspicion before you humiliate me!
But I don’t care about that, other people’s secrets that they don’t want to share we Midnight Sons shouldn’t take the initiative to find out, to cross the line that you shouldn’t be walking is to preach malice, and that’s a sign to go to war.
I’ll be honest with you!
All I want now is the truth!
And that truth is known only to my father, and perhaps to your venerable Tris, but the Scarlet Witch isn’t about to tell it, she’s torturing me!
She knows exactly how to torture me better, like a brilliant blood torturer who knows what to do to create more pain for the prey that falls into her hands.
But I don’t even know why she hates me so much, that vicious woman beloved by you?
It’s obvious that she and I haven’t even met a few times.
As for the tragedy that took place in the Blood Vulture’s Cloister, I admit I saw some of it, but that’s not something you need to worry about!
You can’t solve it either.
I haven’t been hiding out here for the past few days to feel the fish.
I’ve already contacted the Blood Alliance Knights with difficulty through the Blood Vulture Clan heir’s token, and the Blood Knights under Venerable Lord Paying are already on their way to Transylvania.
I assure you, Murphy!”
Missy took a deep breath as she said in a deep voice:
“Those horrors in the Blood Wyvern Cloisters are not troubles you need to worry about, I’ll take care of them for you! This will be your territory too, and no one will take it away from you as I promised.
But right now, Jed is our mutual trouble!
He should never have escaped!
I watched my father’s loyal servants drain their blood, and I don’t know what my father was doing, but he blocked the secret door to the Blood Wyvern Cloisters with shards of desire.
Since they escaped, it means they stole the Archduke’s Certificate from my father’s hand, and they chose to betray the family.
I don’t want to know why, but they must die!
The rules are such that they cannot be broken.”
She glanced at the daytime potion Murphy had placed on the corner of the table and said:
“He put a price on you, didn’t he? Did you come here expecting me to put a price on you too?”
“No.”
Murphy drew the Ethnic Blade of Desire from his belt and planted it in the ground with a thud.
The caged hand guard hilt of the swift sword vibrated and hummed at high speed, and Murphy moved his neck, his eyes dancing a scarlet red in the dimness.
He said:
“It’s like a plot option.
If I have to pick a collaborator between you and Jed, I have to be a little more careful. I’d have to know who’s credible! I’m not going to lie, I have a plan now and have put it into practice.
I’m considering whether or not I want to continue working with one of your two sides that have their own agenda.
Or, to simply take this opportunity to take care of both of your sides, which are obviously not good for anything, together!”
“Hm?”
Missy looked at Murphy.
She wondered if this guy had gone crazy from too much stress, where did he get such a big mouth from a rookie vampire who hadn’t even passed the Black Iron Trial? Even with Tris’s help it was absolutely impossible . Wait a minute!
As if lightning had crossed Missy’s mind, she immediately thought of a crazy possibility.
She rounded her eyes and chortled:
“You’re going to work with those witch hunters? Murphy! You’re crazy!”
“I didn’t just start working with them now, and you, who experienced that night in the Smuggler’s Woods firsthand, should know that better than anyone!
But wasn’t I originally what you call an ‘alien’? An unwelcome alien doing anything crazy isn’t worth the surprise of a ‘noble blood’ like you, is it?”
Murphy revealed a playful and grim smile in the darkness.
He pointed at the sword sticking in the ground in front of him and said to Femis who had already gripped his psychic energy saber at his waist and was backing away:
“Either you gamble all your honor and follow me to cooperate with the witch hunters to get rid of Jade’s gang, so that our hands are stained with the blood of our fellow clansmen and together we become ‘traitors’ in his mouth, thus concluding a vile solidarity that can be mutually trusted!
Either that, or I will have to complete my Black Iron Trial here with your noble blood, and use your miserable death as bait to send the Jed gang where they belong.
You’re right.
That arrogant fool really shouldn’t be here at this time, and he’s actually thinking of tempting me with his poor language and barging into this game uninvited and wanton.
He’s just so blinkered!
Just like a certain stupid Onii-chan who wasn’t honest at all nor did she realize her true situation, she couldn’t even figure out who the alpha was even now?
You have no sense of humor.”
“You’re talking a bit too much.”
Femis said through clenched teeth:
“A mere professional, how dare you.”
Her words stopped in mid-sentence.
This was because she saw Lady Adele slowly appearing in the darkness behind Murphy, the latter holding a thorny stabbing sword in her left hand and grasping a scarlet hand cannon in her right hand, her precise stance blocking all routes out of the tower.
Adele’s body was trembling.
She resisted what she was about to do from her mind and body.
However, how could a Bloodborn refuse an order from an honored elder?
Murphy pulled out a chair and sat diagonally on it, even crossing his legs somewhat relaxed.
He stared at the silent Missy in front of him, spread his hands, and said:
“Phimis Cecilia Le Sombra! You must recognize your situation! And time is passing like precious life, now, make your choice!
I am about to lose my patience.”
