Chapter 30 30.We fixed the bug of no player interface and optimized a more realistic physics engine
When Murphy traveled to this world and saw the broken Steam 800 refrigerator in Trish’s courtyard, he knew that there was some “unique technology” in this world that was difficult to theorize.
Later, when he saw the steam-powered crossbow in the village of Moorland, he thought that the use of steam power in war is probably the most ruthless job that steam mechanics can make, and it turns out that the words that he used to persuade small players to recognize the new world humbly can actually be applied to himself.
“Psychic energy . Arithmetic Pearls?”
Murphy looked at Miriam with a fanart expression of four parts puzzlement mixed with three parts curiosity and three parts disbelief.
He could understand these six words when they were taken apart, but what they meant when combined together was completely beyond him.
Next to him, Maxim was also confused.
Miriam had only told him that this was a serious matter, but the loyal vampire worshipper’s understanding of “steam engineering” was limited to the five words themselves.
He, like his master, was a real Joe Yuko in this regard.
“Ugh, I’ll explain from the beginning.”
Miriam knew by looking at the bewildered expressions of the master and servant in front of her that they didn’t understand her concerns at all.
She took out another precious pearl arrayed in her hand from the case under her buttocks, lifted it up and placed it at a special angle above her eyes, and said to Murphy:
“Look at that treasure bead at that angle and tell me what you see?”
Murphy lifted the array of jewels in his hand as Miriam instructed.
The vampire’s eyesight at night was quite good, and when the jewels in his hand were turned to a specific angle, he immediately saw some unique structures reflected inside the translucent gems.
Much like tiny gears combined with mechanical structures to form an ultra-complex system, densely packed yet assembled in a very regular and industrially beautiful manner, there were three whole systems like this in the transparent gemstone that was larger than a fingernail cap, interconnected with each other by a system of suits of levers to form a larger whole.
“This can’t be!”
Murphy immediately retorted:
“If I’m not blinking . No, it’s definitely my eyesight! There’s no way the industrial standard of the Halflings could have made a super miniature component with this level of precision!
There are at least tens of thousands of parts combined in this.
Is this some sort of illusion?”
“To be precise, it’s a new version of a triplex simplex psionic differential machine made up of forty-four thousand three hundred and twenty-seven parts, iterated to the third generation.
It’s said to be super fast in computing!”
Miriam shrugged, smoothly uttering a rather complex phrase in Transylvanian that made Maxim’s mind spin a bit.
But Murphy understood.
He continued to look at Miriam with questioning eyes, who explained:
“Don’t look at me like that, I don’t understand exactly how it works either, I’m just an administration student, and I still seem to have gotten these terms from the writings of old Prof. Bach Vas Light, just to get credits for passing the elective course of A Brief History of Mechanics, and I didn’t think it would come in handy in this situation.
Anyway, the miniature differential machine in the Operator’s Pearl is certainly not real!
The prototype of the thing takes up the size of an entire gallery in the underground museum at the University of Craftsmen in Chardonnay, but the Halfling Mechanical Craftsmen got their inspiration from the phenomenon of ‘psionic erosion’ that’s all over the place in this world.
They and their dwarven brethren manipulated psionic energy using a special process, and with the help of the Tower of the Ring psionic masters, they used psionic formulas to mobilize psionic factors widely found in nature to form some sort of peculiar spell, which was eventually realized on a microscopic level to mimic the workings of the Differential Machine.
Since then, the miniature arithmetic jewel has come into being, and the halflings have managed to enter an era of steam engineering.”
Miriam shook the treasure bead in her hand and said:
“There are these in various automatons in Chardonnay Harbor, the kind we have in our hands is a purely arithmetic type with no manipulation attachments attached, and it can help the user do a lot just by pouring psychic energy into it.”
“Like what?”
Maxim asked stupidly.
His overly confused mind, which had been exposed to metaphysics from a young age, couldn’t really comprehend all that Miriam had just uttered, but his question came at just the right time.
The redheaded lady rolled her eyes and explained patiently:
“Like helping you translate a poem written in Elvish in under a minute, or helping you plan what you’re going to spend your next month’s paycheck on and how much you’ve already spent this year in a matter of seconds.
If necessary, it can even help you make a breakdown of your income and expenses, just by activating the psychic projector, you can even see its calculations with your eyes.
I was also issued a fist-sized second-generation arithmetic jewel as part of my student benefits when I enrolled at Artisan University…
Now that many campuses throughout Chardo University are undergoing ‘storage reforms’, those professors intend to use the Spiritual Energy Treasure Pearl and the accompanying databases to replace the ancient paper-based literature.
That was really convenient!
It only takes an area the size of a castle to store all the information in an old-fashioned library the size of Cadman City, and all you need that book is to tell your arithmetic treasure pearl, and it can pull it up and copy it for you.
If you’re lazy enough, you can even have it read it for you.
Of course, connecting to a psychic microphone requires extra money, only those noble gentry who aren’t bad with money will use this service, I’ve heard that they’ll use the arithmetic treasure beads to read some pretty nasty stuff to cheer up on certain occasions”
“That’s not the point!”
Murphy probably understood what this arithmetic pearl was, although not necessarily the same, but basically can be regarded as this world’s “computer and operating system”, but at present this thing should only be sprouted and put into use in the land of Chardonnay halflings, has not yet spread to the rest of the continent.
So he asked:
“The point is, why would the Golden Sparrow Kingdom put in the effort to smuggle the arithmetic treasure beads back from the Chardo Halflings? And marking it as a military item?”
“Because it can indeed be used in war, Murphy.”
Miriam sighed:
“That was when I first enrolled in school, and I heard about that aspect of it from my old halfling tutor, supposedly because the Tower of the Ring sided with the Kingdom of the Goldenrod in the Ten Years’ War.
When the situation was unfavorable at the beginning of the war, the psionics proposed to put the arithmetic beads into the military, and they were involved in the development of the arithmetic beads, and their knowledge of the thing was second only to the halfling mechanics.
They modified the internal logic and simulation algorithms of the arithmetic beads, and used three months to set up a set of communication and command system that covered the entire Grimmie army, using each arithmetic bead and its user as a communication node and even calculating the firing position of the artillery, thus realizing a dramatic improvement in the effectiveness of the command.
In the first two years of the Ten Years’ War, it took sixteen months for the Old Religion rebels and their companions to capture the two border provinces of the Kingdom of Canary Blossom, but after the Operational Pearls were put to use in the war, it only took three months for the Grimmie Legion and the Old Praetorian Guards, who had completed the changeover, to drive the rebels out of the country.
I am unable to imagine how they used them to fight the war, but after that incident, the Steam Lords immediately ordered a ban on the exodus of the Operational Treasure Pearls.
Apparently it was the Goldfinch Kingdom’s use of their heart and soul for war that enraged the Mechanicus, and it was rumored that they completely cut off any collaborative research and development with the Tower of the Ring afterward because of this incident as well.
The array of 3,000 treasure beads that we have now snatched back was ordered by the Pathfinder Legion, perhaps that legendary General Loren also wanted to follow the reforms of the Grimni Legion and complete the improvement of the legions under his command.
But if I had to guess, the odds are that these treasure beads probably didn’t come from the Shardo Halflings.”
Ms. Redhead turned the array of treasure beads in her hand over and over twice and said to Murphy:
“There’s no appearance serial number on these, and the style is a little different from the genuine stuff I’ve seen, so these could have been made by someone else. But honestly, other than halfling craftsmen, I can’t think of any other power on the continent that can make such precise things?”
Murphy nodded.
Miriam had already told all the information she knew, and as she had said, this shipment meant a lot to the Goldfinch Kingdom was also indeed a hot potato.
The probability was that that General Loren would not let it go.
However, Murphy was still a bit puzzled, he pinched the Array of Arithmetic Pearls in his hand and used Item Identification, a second later, an information label popped up in front of his eyes:
Name: Third Generation Psychic Energy Operational Pearl – Cracked Version
Effect: Through the completion of spiritual energy resonance with the upper nodes, it can set up a regional spiritual energy encrypted communication network, preset standard type authority tree, realize the simple information transmission between the parallel nodes and the upper and lower nodes, a variety of communication modes and relative orientation calculations, customized coordinate marking and sharing, simple spiritual energy projection, multi-language simple translation, and so on.
Tips!
The algorithmic pearl encryption lock has been completely cracked, so it supports user-defined editing of additional functions.
However, this operation requires knowledge of the field of steam engineering micromechanics, the phenomenon of psionic erosion, the theory of binary information storage, third-generation psionic differential mechanism construction, and cybernetics.
Tip!
Please find the superior node that can activate and initialize the same batch of Operational Baubles.
Crafted by Thiok Flywheel
Item Description:
[The steam engineers’ delving into the wonderful machinery has come to a halt since I left the port of Chardonnay, especially after seeing the so-called third-generation arithmetic beads, I can already be sure of the depravity of my stupid peers; after all, cracking the seven-fold encryption that they are so proud of isn’t any harder than cheating the ogres out of the last piece of meat in their pots.
The fact of the matter was that I had not only finished cracking it, I had upgraded it!
They wanted to monopolize this wonderful technology, but I was inclined to give it away to everyone who needed it or didn’t, and make a little more pocket change for myself on the way.
Well, thank goodness I was born into a world where smart people make the rules and eat the stupid ones out of house and home! -Sulphur Flywheel]
Murphy narrowed his eyes.
He immediately thought of the best scenario to use this Psychic Computing Pearl, and began to thank fate in his heart.
“Find!”
He looked up to Miriam and Maxim:
“Look in the cargo! If that General Loren was going to use this to set up his own legion command system, then there should still be a superior node for that Commander’s Pearl he used for himself. Find it!”
“Right oh, why did I forget about that!”
Miriam immediately jumped up.
Murphy was right, there was a strict permission tree design between the Spiritual Energy Computing Treasure Pearls, and there was no way to activate the entire system without activating the higher level nodes.
She commanded Maxim to go up and lift the overturned carriage, but the thing was too heavy and the Blood Servant was injured, Murphy shook his head and walked up and clasped the edge of the carriage with both hands.
Relying on the 10.5 strength granted by upgrading to a rare character template to power through the blackness of the reinforcement, she then easily lifted the entire wagon on one side.
The two assistants immediately climbed in and first pushed out the crushed soldiers, and then took out all the large and small boxes inside.
In the deepest part of the carriage, Miriam found an exquisite brass chest.
She carefully carried the thing out and placed it in front of Murphy’s eyes, the thing had a metal disk where the lock was, but there were only two buttons 0 and 1 on it.
“It’s a binary encryption lock, I’ve seen safes like this in books! Quite a traditional purely mechanical structure, but very useful, there are inert materials inside so it’s not affected by psychic energy spells, and it’s usually configured with acid bottles or finely crafted gold-burning bombs inside, the power of which can destroy everything within ten meters of the contraption.”
The redhead said rubbing her head:
“That’s a problem, entering it randomly without the code could destroy what’s inside.”
Murphy didn’t say anything, just reached out and placed his hand on the brass case.
Item identification activated! The information tab popped up:
Name: Thiok Flywheel’s Self-Destructing Safe Model 400
Effect: Storing valuables.
Item Description:
[Thiok Flywheel is a talented halfling mechanic from a famous but deviant family. He has many bad habits! For example, all of his combination boxes use a standardized code, which is one of the countless little secrets of the mad genius who now resides in the Dark Mountains.
People still don’t know the life and background of mechanical weapons blackmailer Sulphur Flywheel, but there are rumors in the grapevine that his favorite girl’s birthday is April 14th…]
“Snap.”
Murphy, who was a former professional software tester, raised his hand without hesitation and typed in the string of binary characters 110011110, looking at Miriam next to him with a horrified look on her face.
Feeling that Murphy must have been pressing randomly, she hurriedly took a few steps back holding her head and crouching in defense, lest that safe blow up and injure herself.
But a miracle then happened!
When Murphy’s finger lifted, the small brass box popped open outward with a click, revealing the rounded arithmetic pearl in it.
It was larger and more delicate than the other psychic arithmetic beads, the size of a baby’s fist, and had the factory number left by the halfling mechanics on the silver-gray backing used for decoration and protection on the outside.
This was actually a genuine item?
However, why was its appearance so different from ordinary arithmetic beads?
With such doubts, Murphy reached out and took out the core arithmetic pearl in the box that served as the superior node, only the moment he touched it, the translucent character card in front of Murphy’s eyes suddenly blurred for a moment, like the snowflake-like shadows that appeared after the TV screen was interfered with.
It returned to normal after a second’s time.
Afterward, in Murphy’s astonished gaze, a line of prompts jumped out from in front of his eyes:
Detected special-technology item [Fourth Generation Psychic Computing Pearl Trial – Code 003], the level of psychic technology possessed by this item is sufficient to complete the simplified reproduction of some of the functions of the Test Administrator System!
Please ask Alpha to specify the functions that need to be simplified and reproduced from the list of currently unlocked functions.
Tip!
Due to the item’s backward production process and cumbersome principles it is still in the early stages of the tech tree, resulting in a small data memory, so please do not specify complex functions to be replicated.
“I’m in luck today!”
Murphy whistled, a smile of double happiness on his face.
Although he still couldn’t figure out how this thing worked, and didn’t really understand what kind of strange level this world’s weird steam engineering had developed to, none of that mattered!
Because, didn’t he have the player interface he had been longing for?
Ah, thank nature for that!
