Chapter 285 284. ding! Development of the new career system is complete
“Everyone please go out first, I need to talk to Earl Sheridan about some personal topics.”
Murphy stabilized his mind, freeing himself from that “horrible” bug thought, then he waved his hand and issued the order with a haggard face.
Everyone but Tris obediently left the room.
Tris herself did not move, nor did Murphy ask her to move, she was always the “exception” in Murphy’s mind, and both Archduke Bloodwing and His Excellency Count Cadman knew this very well.
As the door of the room was closed by Miss Phyllis, the psychic energy room that still had a trace of decaying smell became quiet.
Murphy sat weakly in a chair as Tris brought him a cup of fresh blood, while the young Earl of Sherron watched the entire process.
Especially when she saw Murphy slurping up the blood, her throat couldn’t help but move up and down.
“Not giving you a drink is to let you get used to yourself now.”
Tris glanced at her, as if she could smell the young Sheridan’s craving, and she reminded:
“The hardest hurdle for newborn vampires to overcome is for curbing their unquenchable thirst for blood, if you can’t control that urge, you’ll quickly slip into the image of what others call ‘monsters’, and there’s no end to a vampire’s thirst for blood.
If you indulge yourself, then you will soon have your mind manipulated by that dark addiction and allow yourself to become a walking corpse that survives activities only to suck blood.
There have never been many such individuals among the Bloods, and some have gone too far to the point where the family they are a part of would even send an assassin to dispose of these family ‘shames’.
Fighting this addiction is the first and everlasting hard part of eternity for a vampire, that obscure craving under midnight that stays with you for the rest of your life.
You won’t be free of it until the eternal silence comes.
Do you understand what I mean?”
“Uh-huh.”
Little Sherron nodded her head vigorously.
She wasn’t a young lady living in her own world; two years of suffering had made her far more mature than her peers and had taught her to use her wits wisely.
The Last Winged Cavalry had been able to fight against the Pioneer Legion in the mountains for two years, and in addition to the valor of Knight Valander and his men, the wisdom of Shirren’s support was indispensable.
Such a being was surely studied carefully before deciding to receive the Midnight Blessing, and she was surely already well versed in the strengths and weaknesses of the Bloods.
“Your arm and leg will heal in a few days, but the newborn limb is more fragile, so you may have to take some time to readjust.”
Murphy put down his glass of water and took out a handkerchief to wipe the blood stains from the corners of his mouth as he spoke to the “heir” in front of him, who had made a pact with him and had been given his freedom:
“Your wings may take shape in a few hours, and through the passing of your blood and mine, I have given you three new powers.
You will have wings that are stronger and larger than those of a normal vampire, and you will have the ability to call upon the Astral Wolves and the Ravens to do your bidding.
You will learn and use these midnight blessings carefully and properly.
I am a very easy-going person.
But that doesn’t mean I’ll allow my heirs to tread astray.
Though the blood contract between you and I has been severed, I can still feel your presence, and if at some point in time I learn from the blood’s signals that you have indulged in your descent into monstrosity, then…”
“Without your rebuke, I will end my own cursed life with my own hands.”
Sitting on the edge of the stone platform, feeling her newborn arms and legs as she blinked, in the light of the large, blood-dotted eyes, little Sherron responded in a serious tone:
“I have violated the traditions of House Sicomair by seeking refuge in the midnight in order to survive, and I will not allow myself to slide down into the deeper night.
While this may be more of a transaction on a political level, I still wish to express my immense gratitude to you for granting me, a poor man teetering on the brink of death, a true new life.
I had thought
I would never be able to get up on my own again in this short life.”
Her words were filled with emotions and sighs that didn’t belong to a little person of her age, and she reached out to touch the two mechanical prosthetics that she had made with her own hands that were placed beside her, and a smile appeared on her small, finally restored but more or less abnormally miserable face, which she intended to put away as a souvenir.
But just at this time, Murphy suddenly coughed.
He said:
“Your prosthetic limb, can you leave it to me as a souvenir?”
“Huh?”
Little Earl Sherron’s eyes widened as she explained:
“I made this all by myself, it’s roughly made because it’s hard to find suitable materials in the mountain forest, if you love engineering items like this, then when I find better materials, I can .”
“No, no, no, this one is just right in its roughness with precision.”
Murphy flashed a smile and said:
“My warriors will be ecstatic to have them, well, actually I don’t think I should be the one to show them the wonders of this steam engineering.
It should be you!
So, Little Earl Sherron, considering that the political deal between us has been completed, and that you are going to live in Scarlet Castle for a long time afterward, can I invite you to take up the position of ‘Engineering Trainer’ of Scarlet Castle?”
Sherron’s great eyes were filled with great doubt.
But next to her, Tris helplessly covered her eyes, she knew it! Little Murphy’s mind had completely turned into a shape where everything revolved around his Otherworldly Warrior’s “game experience”.
In his eyes, compared to the value of political allies, Xue Lun is far less important than the superior engineering attainments possessed by this little girl.
No, the two are not the same.
Tris basically had already guessed how “fulfilling” little Sheridan’s life in Scarlet Fortress would be in the future. Those “gunners” among the otherworldly warriors were crazy about the fact that they couldn’t find any qualified mechanics in this hellhole of Transylvania, but little Sheridan’s arrival was almost perfect for filling this gap. But the arrival of little Sheridan almost perfectly filled this gap.
In Murphy’s words, this wave of small players is expected to be “ecstatic”.
“Engineering trainer?”
Sheridan said with a blink:
“So, is it a role similar to that of an instructor? You want me to teach the mysteries of engineering to your fierce warriors?”
“Yes! I will prepare a house just for you, to suit your tastes. No, no, no, you can design its shape and interior yourself, and then hand it over to my warriors to build it for you.
That way it will make up a unique chain of missions.”
Murphy would already be thinking out of the box by now.
Although he was weak, his mind was extremely active, and he picked up the cup of blood in his chair and introduced it to the little Sheridan who was being “pulled down” in front of him:
“I have always claimed that my warriors are mountain folk from the Sax region, but this lie is impossible to maintain in front of you true mountain folk. Considering that you have joined the Blood Vulture Clan and have become an important high ranking member of the Transylvanian Governor’s District, I must explain this great secret to you.
My warriors. They come from another realm!
You know that I am an Astral Summoner, and my venerable Lady Tris is a once-in-a-century psionic genius of the Blood Clan, and with my collaboration with her, we developed this spell of summoning Essence Spirits from other realms to reach the material world and fight for us.
It is a secret that is tied to the rise of Transylvania, and I would like you to keep it secret and grant my warriors a true and credible ‘place of origin’ as leader of the mountain people.”
“So that’s it?”
Sherron’s large eyes danced with the exciting points of light that come from hearing secrets, and she said:
“In fact, Knight Valander had noticed the movements of those brave men under your command before, especially the scenes of them fighting bravely as they approached Count Sicor’s domain to clear out the jackals were all reported to me by our scouting knights.
They call themselves mountain folk, but they resemble us in no way.
I thought that these mountain folk came from the ancient kingdom of Calum in the east, but who would have thought that they actually came from the other dimension, which means that they won’t really die in our material world?” “Well, that’s true, it’s this characteristic that fills them with courage and contempt for death, but considering that they have complete and complex writing patterns and cultural traditions in their own realm, you may need to utilize the Arithmetic Treasure Pearl to communicate with them.”
Murphy threw an arithmetic jewel with open permissions to little Sherron, who was no stranger to this thing as a mechanic, and held it in his hand and looked it up and down, skimming his lips:
“This is the work of Master Thicke Flywheel? I could tell at a glance, that madman always likes to give his work a little unnecessary decoration.”
“Oh? Do you know him too?”
Murphy asked, and Sherron Jr. shook his head:
“The halfling mechanic who taught me engineering before was once a fellow student of Thiok Flywheel, and she’s been stressing to me to stay away from that madman.
Unfortunately, my mentor had also perished, along with my parents, in the disaster that befell the city of Sikor. Alas, it was because she put me in her safe at the last minute that I held out through the plague until Valander and Sunny rescued me.”
“Well, my warriors will certainly return to the ruins of Westcott City afterward.”
Murphy said:
“You may accompany them then, or even preside over the operation if you wish. But for now, let’s talk about your duties afterward.
After you become an engineering trainer, you will not only teach my warriors about the mysteries of engineering, but you will also help them repair their firearms and come up with even more powerful engineering weapons to use as the next weapons and commodities they will acquire.
The Count Seacor’s territory is in a state of disarray, and you need money if you want to revitalize it.
I can support you partially here, but you’ll have to earn more money on your own, and trust me, if you can show my warriors that you’re worth it, then they’ll be happy to wave tons of gold coins to please you.”
“Wow, that sounds and feels so evil.”
Little Sherron grinned and tossed the arithmetic pearl in her hand in the air as she leapt to her feet:
“I can’t wait to take office, by the way, you said earlier that you had gotten back the production line that used to be in Westcoat City from the Carpe family for us, have you picked out the exact address for the project yet?”
“That’s exactly what I wanted to talk to you about.”
Murphy exchanged a glance with Tris as he said:
“I intend to build the factory in the area of the river bay where the Andromeda Hills and Count Cadman’s territory meet, the terrain there is flat and there is enough water power to provide energy for the factory, the most important thing is that it is sparsely populated and we can be allowed to experiment with some dangerous things there.
Of course, if you want Westcoat City to recreate its former prosperity, then I can put part of the production line.”
“No, there’s no need for that.”
Little Sherron said with a sigh:
“The ruins of Sikor City and the nearby earth have been poisoned by a plague of psychic energy, and when we had the Vam Priestess of the Ice Bay region come to look at it, she told us that no life could be restored there for at least twenty years.
The city that was once the capital and jewel of the Bosian Confederacy has been completely erased from history, a reality we have to recognize even if we long for the glory of the past.
Count Seacor’s domain will have to reprogram its mode of existence in the future, and that is something that Knight Valander and I need to consider.”
“How about as a backwater?”
Murphy said softly:
“There are large tracts of high-quality pasture in the Westco Count’s Territory, where the witch hunters’ hunting war ponies and your Shadow Trail warhorses can graze, and it’s easier to enter Ice Bay through your mountain forests than to detour around it from the vicinity of Batasin, and our commercial exchanges with the Ice Bay region will inevitably fall on your shoulders in the future.
Coupled with the threat of the Black Plague, it would be a very good strategic choice to make the northernmost Sikor Territory the hinterland of all of Transylvania, and I give you my word, little Sherron.
After the reconstruction of Scarlet Fortress is completed, and after we have survived the Black Plague, I will definitely rebuild Westcoat City for you, this is my promise as the Governor of Transylvania.”
“Well, personally, I am willing to accept it, but please understand that the elders of the mountain people are stubborn and conservative, and it will not be easy to convince them.”
Little Earl Sherron did not immediately agree, but from her expression and attitude it was clear that she was not resistant to Murphy’s offer.
After the poison of the ten years of war, the Xike Collar really needed a long time to recuperate and redevelop, Murphy was silent for a moment and added:
“There is one last thing, about the belonging of the Winged Cavalry.”
He said to little Sherron:
“I’m not going to discuss this matter with you, I’ll go straight to my decision, you can still retain the nominal command of the Sicor Winged Cavalry, but Knight Valander and the cavalry under his command are going to be brought under the control of my military commander Baron Maxim as an important part of Transylvania’s overall defense.
Additionally, you are to begin the process of recruiting and training new recruits from amongst the people of the realm as well as my warriors immediately.
The jackals are only a trivial problem, the challenges we will face next will not be possible without force support.”
“We are prepared for that.”
Little Sheridan said with a nod:
“Knight Valander’s only request is that the rebuilding of the Winged Cavalry be done by him, and that you, Your Excellency the Governor, not interfere with the Winged Cavalry’s ancient heritage for any reason.
Please understand that for a Winged Cavalryman to be well-bred he must pass certain secret methods that have been passed down from the ancestors of the mountain people, and that this mighty cavalryman is the culmination of a mountain legacy.
It is not as simple as it seems.”
“I can understand that, and I do not intend to interfere.”
Murphy nodded and patted Tris’s slender waist again, and the Blood Vulture Archduke gripped her own serenade scepter as she sauntered over to look at little Sherron.
After a few seconds she tapped her scepter on Sherron’s shoulder and asked:
“So, Sandra Sherron Sicomair Le Sombra, do you wish to become one of us under the watchful eye of midnight? Are you willing to lead your people and your arms into the new order of Transylvania? Will you give your devotion to this land and swear to defend it?”
“I do!”
The young Count of Sherron answered earnestly, but then she added in a whisper:
“But our feud with the Pathfinder Legion will one day come to a head.”
“Your enemies are our enemies.”
Murphy promised:
“Cadman City just happens to have a score to settle with that Dwarf Marshal and his soldiers as well.”
“Then I have no problem with that.”
Sherron said in a hushed voice:
“In the name of the ancient Black Plague Covenant, I am willing to become a member of this new system and obey the commands of His Excellency the Governor and the Archduke of the Blood Wyvern, dedicating the strength and loyalty of the mountain people in order to resist that enemy of civilization!”
“Very well.”
Tris nodded and tapped the Serenade Scepter on the other side of Sherron’s shoulder again as she said:
“Then, by the ancient claim of Clan Bloodwyvern to Transylvania, and in the name of the Archduke of Clan Bloodwyvern, I recognize your authority as the ‘Countess of Sycor’ and grant you the power to form a ‘Sycorian Faction’ within the clan.
It is important that you may choose your faction’s character yourself!”
“That’s too hard to hear, Archduke.”
Little Sherron tilted her head with a skittish grin as she shook her head:
“If I’m going to start my own faction, then I’m definitely going to call it ‘Scarlet Claws’ or ‘Midnight Blades’ or something like that.”
“Snap.”
Tris’s finger tapped hard on little Sherron’s forehead as she chortled:
“Seriously, this is business, call your faction whatever you like, but I suggest you don’t be so pompous, you’ll be laughed at hard by the other clans when they hear about it, and the main piece of the puzzle in this whole thing is this ‘ritualistic’ .
Ah, why is that word popping out of my mouth? I feel like I’m giving out tasks to the little ones?
Ugh, I’ve been infected by some asshole too.”
