Chapter 304: “Captain” of the Obsidian.
Chapter 304: The Captain of the Obsidian
Duncan carried Aey on his shoulder and was the first to walk through the large hole, stepping into the upside down corridor, the others followed him in turn, Vanna walked at the end of the group this time, in case an attacker appeared out of nowhere.
The team cautiously traveled through the corridor, everyone was always paying attention to the surrounding movements, while carefully observing every structure in the corridor.
And after stepping into the corridor, they did discover some details that they hadn’t previously noticed at the entrance.
This corridor was not just as simple as being upside down – distortions and weirdness were everywhere.
Doors of apparently disparate sizes were set haphazardly into the walls on either side, some upright, some upside down, and round portholes were occasionally visible on the walls, yet the opposite side of the window was either a wall or another door or window, and strange geometric projections appeared abruptly on the walls or floors, which appeared as if they were the structure of a room elsewhere, but blended incorrectly into the corridor.
“The state of the Obsidian’s interior was as if it had been transformed by some horror doctor’s knife into a giant beast’s internal organs, all of which were stacked and connected in a haphazard and twisted fashion, with rooms intersecting, doors askew, and exits and entrances randomly connecting in what looked like the main corridor, and at the end of the corridor… …there was still no telling what lurked in the dimness.
The interior of the ship was very quiet, only the sound of people’s footsteps knocking on the “floor” which should be the roof, and this sound echoed inside the ship, as if it was mixed with something else.
Nina and Shirley were more or less nervous, but Alice was in a pretty good state – the doll wasn’t brave, but she was severely lacking in common sense, and since all of her shipboard sailing experience came from the equally sinister and bizarre Lost Country, she didn’t see anything to be afraid of inside this ghost ship.
After walking forward like this for an unknown amount of time, the long corridor seemed to stretch endlessly in the darkness, and the area ahead seemed to dim down more and more, Duncan then poked the dove on his shoulder, “Lighting.”
Aye cried out shrilly at once, “Take this solar powered battle axe! Embrace the glory of battle!”
With a staccato cry from the dove, a bright green flame rose up in it, the blazing flames dispelling the dimness in the corridor at once.
Vanna looked at this scene in astonishment and muttered in a low voice to Maurice in front of her, “This pigeon …… can even be used like this?”
Maurice’s tone was exceptionally bland: “The captain uses it like that all the time – sometimes when the dove isn’t around, he uses himself to illuminate it.”
Vanna: “……?”
But this time, before she could marvel again at the huge difference between the “legendary Captain Duncan” and the real one, a sudden noise interrupted everyone’s actions.
“Knock knock ……”
It sounded like a dull pounding – coming from right behind a nearby door!
Everyone stopped instantly, and a single gaze simultaneously focused on the direction from which the sound came.
It was a blue door with the words “Captain’s Room” written on it.
In terms of normal ship structure, of course the captain’s cabin couldn’t be in this location, but on this ghost ship that was already in complete chaos, with various cabin entrances piled up haphazardly, it was possible for any door to appear in any place.
“Knock knock ……”
The knocking sounded once more, more pronounced than a moment ago, and seemingly a bit more urgent.
It was as if there was a survivor of a shipwreck hiding behind that door, anxiously tapping on the door of the room to try to elicit help after hearing movement coming from the hallway.
Vanna silently reached out and touched the huge sword behind her, Shirley slightly raised the black chains in her hands, Nina ducked behind Alice, and Alice raised her hands and cradled her head.
Duncan came to the door with no expression on his face.
The knocking was still going on and on.
But Duncan had no intention of opening the door, he just curled his fingers and tapped twice on the door in the same manner.
The knocking inside suddenly stopped, and it seemed that the person who made the sound was a bit stunned, after a few seconds of silence, a hoarse and low voice suddenly broke the silence and rang out from behind that blue door, “Is there anyone outside ……?”
“There is.” Duncan said faintly.
“Ah, great! I’m the captain of the Obsidian, I don’t know what happened to the ship, but I’m trapped,” the raspy, low voice spoke immediately, “What’s your name, kind sir at the door? Will you open the door for me?” “Just call me Duncan,” Duncan said, while squeezing his hand behind him to signal the others to be at ease, “Before I open the door, I’d like to make sure – are you really the captain of the Obsidian? ”
“Of course! My name is Cristo Barberi, you can look up my name and badge number from the Port Authority, and my badge is in the room,” the voice said immediately, “but …… right now this damned door won’t budge for some reason, and I really have no way to step out and prove my identity to you ……”
“Next question,” Duncan continued, ignoring the ramblings of the man in the door, “What year is it?”
“This year?” The voice in the door visibly froze, probably finding the question a bit odd, but answered, “Of course it’s 1894, what’s wrong with that?”
Duncan glanced back at Maurice, who nodded softly.
1894, that was the date of the shipwreck of the Obsidian.
Thinking of that shipwreck, Morris suddenly stepped forward and asked, “May I ask this captain, do you know that you have a passenger on board called ‘Brown Scott’?”
“Passenger?” The voice behind the blue door hesitated a bit, “I can’t afford to memorize the names of every passenger on board, but …… you’re talking about Brown Scott? Ah, I remember, that I can remember, the folklorist? He’s a reputable figure, I’ve talked to him a few times, I remember him as a very thin gentleman, always meticulously groomed with his hair and beard, he’s very knowledgeable about the funeral customs of the various city-states and is interested in that frozen sea further north in the Frost ……”
Listening to the voices coming from behind the blue door, Maurice nodded softly and whispered to Duncan, “No deviation.”
“Clear mind, intact memory, and able to accurately state his name,” Vanna, who had never spoken aside, suddenly broke the silence, “but we can’t rule out evil creatures that set traps after drawing on human memories and emotions; such things are not uncommon on ghost ships. ”
“Oh, that doesn’t really matter, as long as it does have that captain’s memories,” Duncan said indifferently, “The monster could also try reasoning first – if reason doesn’t make sense, then physics, it always does. ”
Vanna froze, “…… That’s true.”
Duncan placed his hand on the knob of the blue wooden door.
“I’m going to open the door, Mr. Barberry.” He said to the door.
He then turned the knob – unlike the completely rusted hatch doors he’d seen before, this one looked undamaged – and as he turned the knob, there was immediately the slight sound of the lock cylinder turning.
The door opened.
With everyone watching slightly nervously, Duncan pushed the door open.
An upside down and misplaced room was presented to the crowd.
All the walls were twisted, the ceiling was as if it was going to collapse completely, the original furnishings in the room were fused haphazardly on the nearby walls and the ground, as if they were buried by wood and metal, what was exposed was half a table, half a chair and such a broken part, the wall facing the door of the room was a huge hole, the hole opposite the darkness of a piece of darkness, I do not know where it leads to.
And there was no one in this upside-down room.
Duncan swept towards the empty room, but the next moment, he heard the voice of Captain “Christo Barberi” from behind the blue door again: “Ah, did you open the door? I seem to feel the shaking, but the door is still in my hands, but it does not move …… Is there something wrong with my perception or cognition? Can you help me? I may have been stuck out here on the sea for too long and already have some not-so-good symptoms, and it would be nice if one of the priests would be willing to lend a hand ……”
Duncan frowned.
He stepped into the mismatched room and slowly turned that door around to look behind the panel.
He saw the “Cristo Barberi”.
A …… “thing” like a mutilated melted wax statue clung to the door, and in the deformed and collapsed structure you could vaguely see an arm pressed against the door panel and a few bundles of fibers connecting the hands, as well as a large mass of something that was impossible to tell what the “body” was. The “body”.
The ghastly, twisted mass was thus fused to the door, still rising and writhing slightly when Duncan gazed upon it, and emitting a hoarse, low voice from some part of its structure-
“Ah, I couldn’t see ye, did ye come in? The room may be a bit of a mess, there was a big jolt earlier and I haven’t tidied up the room since …… I seem to be having some trouble with my vision, but it’s not a big problem, and the most troubling thing right now is that I’m not in a position to move my body, and it seems like I’ve forgotten what to do about controlling my arms and legs – -By the way, do you have a doctor with you?”
