Chapter 170: Entering the Curtain

Chapter 170 – Stepping into the Curtain
“See? This is how you make fries, it’s very simple – just be careful not to fry them or pinch them, you don’t need to poke your head around the frying pan and keep an eye on them, and you don’t need to taste anything salty or bland, remember?”

In the morning of the Lost Country ship, Duncan was in the kitchen with a serious face instructing Alice who was full of nervousness, while in the frying pan in front of the two of them, the fries which were still a little whitish were rolling up and down in the hot oil, emitting continuous and continuous zippy sounds.

“Remember …… remember!” Alice’s eyes were unblinking as she looked at the steaming hot frying pan, one hand was still tightly gripping a kitchen knife, and on the plate next to her were potato chunks that had been cut into bad shapes by her – these chunks of potatoes would become the ingredients for other dishes.

Duncan looked at the frying pan, and then looked at the mannequin next to him, and nodded slightly, saying that for such a simple thing, this Bean would always not screw up again, and then he noticed the kitchen knife in Alice’s hand, and couldn’t help but feel a little squirmy in his heart, “……Could you please put down the kitchen knife first, and after cutting something, don’t always carrying it.”

A cursed mannequin carrying a kitchen knife and standing in the kitchen killing (for potatoes), how can this picture look unlucky.

It was as if the next second would change to a thrilling and exciting BGM, and then a blood bar that could stab through the screen would appear on Alice’s head.

“Oh …… oh!” Alice then reacted and hurriedly put the chopper back to the side, then waved her hand to the captain rather confidently, “Captain you can just go back! I’ve already learned this, you and Aey just wait and eat!”

Duncan stared at Alice for another half a day to make sure that the doll really wouldn’t have any more problems, and then he breathed a small sigh of relief, followed by a feeling in his heart –

After such a long time, he was finally able to produce fries steadily on this Lost Country ship as well!
……

On the second floor of the antique store, beside the dining table, Nina, who had a piece of medicinal cloth attached to her head, suddenly raised her head in curiosity and glanced at her uncle, “Uncle, I wanted to ask before, why did you frown all the time in the morning ah …… And just now, why did you seem to exhale as if you were suddenly relaxing? ……”

“Did you? I didn’t notice ……” Duncan was stunned for a moment, his attention instantly falling across the distant space in this small antique store, then he smiled and shook his head, “Nothing, just remembered something in the accounts, just now mentally calculated it, and now it’s solved. ”

“Oh,” Nina nodded, “I say, it feels like you were all tense just now.”

Duncan didn’t say anything, just kept his calm smile, but he couldn’t help but mutter in his mind – this girl is quite observant.

Nina, on the other hand, at this time probed at the small window facing the street at the end of the second floor corridor, and hesitated for a moment before muttering in a low voice, “Shirley didn’t come today.”

“…… People have their own place,” Duncan cried and laughed as he looked across the street at the girl who was showing her lonely face, “And you have to go to school today, how do you have time to go out and play with her.”

“I should have inquired about her exact place of residence,” Nina added, “so that I could go to her when she didn’t have time to come to me.”

Duncan didn’t say anything for a moment, and there was a silence of two or three seconds before he asked softly, “Are you enjoying this new friend? Obviously you haven’t actually spent much time together.”

“Shelly she’s nice, and she saved my life in the museum,” Nina spoke up immediately, “And …… and …… “

“And what?”

“And when she lived here, I chatted with her and Dog at night, and inquired about her a bit, and learned that she had been dependent on Dog, living in an alleyway in the slums, where there weren’t even all the streetlights at night, and the house was leaky from the rain and the wind, and I …… “

“Nina,” Duncan suddenly interrupted the girl in front of him, his expression taking on a slight seriousness, “Friendship can’t be based on sympathy, and that’s especially true for a child like Shirley.”

Nina was stunned for a moment, looking up to meet Duncan’s gaze for a few moments before slowly scratching the hair at her temples, “Uncle you suddenly said a very philosophical thing hey ……”

Duncan: “……”

“But uncle you did remind me that I probably have a little sympathy,” Nina added right after, “but …… I just want her to be able to live a better life, I can feel it, even though when she lived here she was always inexplicably nervous, but she’s actually happy, and isn’t it a little presumptuous of me …… to judge her so much?”

Duncan, however, did not answer, he seemed to fall into a short period of reflection, after a few moments before he smiled and shook his head, “Don’t think about it so much, let’s ask Shirley about her place of residence next time we see her, as for now …… hurry up and finish your meal, the school time is almost here.”

“Okay!” Nina immediately nodded her head obediently, immediately after that she seemed to have thought of something, her face revealed a look of excitement that was eager to give it a try, “Right, so will I be able to …… ride that new bike to school today?”

“No,” Duncan raised his eyes and rejected the other without hesitation, “Have you forgotten how badly you fell last night?”

As he spoke, his mind drifted back to what had happened yesterday after Nina had come home – the first thing the girl had seen was the brand new bike parked on the first floor, and she had practically jumped in place with excitement before she had rushed to get on it and try it out, and it had taken her about thirty seconds, I think, before she had clattered down on the doorway …… Now she has a bandaid on her head.

“I …… thought riding a bike would be easy,” Nina said, lowering her head in some embarrassment, “I see that my classmates can …… “

Duncan sighed.

He should have thought of that, if there were no bicycles in this antique store, and Nina hadn’t had many friends over the years, then how could she possibly have had the chance to learn to ride a bike – something he had completely overlooked when he bought his own bike.

“Take the bus to learn today, don’t run, our family isn’t too bad for this fare right now,” Duncan fished out a few coins and put them in front of Nina, “I’ll teach you to ride a bike when you get back – it really isn’t that hard, with your smart energy, you’ll probably learn in a few days.”

Nina was a little dismayed at first, but soon cheered up again and nodded happily, “Oh!”

After a while, Nina ran happily out the front door of the antique store, while Duncan stood in the small window on the second floor of the antique store and watched the girl’s silhouette run through the streets in the morning light towards the bus stop not far away.

More and more carriages, horses, people and the sound of the city is echoing between the streets, this city is waking up in the sunshine a little bit, golden red sunlight along the distant ridge diffusion over, look as if a layer of illusory rise of the brilliant curtain.

A curtain formed by flames that swept across the entire city-state.

Duncan’s expression suddenly froze, and he frowned as he gazed at the scaled houses in the distance.

The magnificent image of the curtain of flames sweeping across the city-state disappeared from the haze, as if the impression that had just been reflected in his mind for a moment had been nothing more than a momentary, unfounded fantasy.

Duncan’s furrowed brow did not relax in the least, however, and he simply continued to stare into the distance, as if trying to find another layer of reality overlapping with that magnificent sunset – it was several minutes before he slowly withdrew his gaze.

He stared in thought for a moment and beckoned to the air beside him, “Aye.”

In the next second, a cloud of ghostly green flames exploded suddenly in the air, and the undead bird circled and manifested itself from the flames; Aey flapped his wings and landed on Duncan’s shoulder, yelling as he belched loudly, “Hiccups …… Who’s calling… . burp …… fleet?”

Duncan’s emotions were all of a sudden incoherent as he craned his head to stare daggers at the pigeon that had almost swelled up, “…… How much did you eat on the ship?”

Aye flapped his wings and stretched his neck vigorously, “The moment of feasting has arrived …… Burp!”

Duncan expressionless look at this bird, after a moment before sighed: “No wonder Alice side drummed half a day, the final end to the cabin of the things so little, together let you cut off …… never mind, just as not waste it. Can you still fly and move? Sixth neighborhood.”

The pigeon suddenly made a loud staccato sound, “The mission will be achieved! The mission will be achieved!”

In the next instant, there was a flash of fire in a small window on the second floor of the antique store, and a swollen, fat pigeon leapt out of the window in a single bound, staggering in the direction of the Sixth Street District.

And at the same time, deep in the sixth block, two dark gray steam cars were driving through the empty and cold streets.

The tall Vanna was sitting in the back seat of one of the cars, her giant sword at hand, while she herself gazed silently at the scene on the street outside.

Due to the uncertainty of the situation of the chapel, Vanna did not directly enter the neighborhood with the overly eye-catching steam walker, but chose to personally lead a part of her elites to enter in a low-profile first, while the support team stood by in the nearby neighborhoods.

After entering the sixth block, she really noticed the first time that the “atmosphere” …… here was very wrong.

Too much lack of vitality of the community, scattered lazy, slow response to external stimuli residents, and those old facilities that are in disrepair, even beyond the bottom line of tolerance in the lower city.

There was an aura lingering everywhere, and the entire neighborhood gave her the feeling …… as if time had frozen in a forgotten crevice.
