Chapter 620 – Giles’ Messenger

Chapter 620 – Giles’ Emissary

Sir Wendell grinned, and gave a slight toss of his head towards the wall.

“Perhaps we should find somewhere less crowded to converse.”

Paul hesitated, nodded, and followed Sir Wendell to the corner.

The two men clinked glasses and each took a small sip.

“How enviable!”

Sir Wendell stroked his moustache and complimented, “Her Highness Catherine is a rare beauty, I think you, Earl, have become the public enemy of more than half of the Jingyao boys.”

“But ……” a look of doubt came back to his face.

“But what?” Paul pursued.

“Uh …… nothing! I think Lord Earl can easily manage those little things with his skill!”

Wendell laughed.

“Little things?”

What exactly was he trying to say?
Paul’s brow furrowed slightly, “Sir Wendell, can you tell me about the little things?”

“Alas, yes!”

Sir Wendell sighed slightly and said with some difficulty, “I have heard that the relationship between our king’s majesty and his sister, Princess Catherine, is …… a bit awkward!”

What? Paul was alerted in his heart.

Could they ……

“There’s been a rumor in Jingyao that the old king had intended to pass the throne to his daughter – that is, Her Royal Highness Princess Catherine.”

Sir Wendell moved closer to Paul and explained in a thin voice.

“You know, this Princess Highness of ours is not inferior to a man at all… politics, military, all can be handled well, and she even fought with Archduke Giles on the battlefield before.”

“So it’s too normal for the old king to have this mind. But ……”

“Later on, I don’t know why the throne still fell into the hands of His Majesty the current king.”

“Alas! With such a strong sister, I think His Majesty the King should have some grudges in his heart ……”

Sir Wendell seemingly carelessly divulged the secret story.

“Ha, don’t take it to heart, these are actually some rumors that have no shadow, anyway, congratulations on being able to pick the pearl of the kingdom in your hands.”

Whew! Paul breathed a light sigh of relief, so that’s what Wendell had to say.

Seeing Paul’s reaction, Wendell’s heart was a bit strange, how did this Paul Gleeman guy turn into a relaxed face instead.

Knowing that he was already in the highest power struggle, the least he could do was to be terrified, right?

“Sir Wendell!”

Paul said with a smile, “Thank you for informing me of these things, I will …… take a good look at it! But I believe that everyone wants this country to go in a good direction, am I right?”

“Haha, you’re right!”

Sir Wendell said with slight embarrassment, after all, he was sent here by a lord who had started a rebellion not long ago.

Seeing that his words didn’t have the desired effect, he changed the topic.

“All along, Archduke Giles has been very fond of all sorts of fine things from the Northwest Gulf!”

“Oh, the paper you guys make is so convenient! And those fine porcelains, they’ve become the standard ornaments in noble mansions.”

Paul raised the wine glass in his hand and clinked it with him.

“It is our honor, and we will continue to give two hundred percent of our enthusiasm to serve your distinguished guests.”

Wendell took a small sip and then said, “Our Grand Duke – His Excellency Giles – has always hoped to make friends with you and forge a sincere friendship!”

Paul was a picture of surprise, “Oh? Has my little bit of thin air even reached the ears of Grand Duke Giles?”

“Oh ooh ooh ooh ooh!” Wendell laughed, “The merchant ships in your domain have nearly filled our harbor. Seeing those peculiar, merchant ships that can come and go on the sea without oars or oarsmen, anyone would be interested in the owner behind them.”

“I’m glad our commerce is so close.”

Wendell looked at him with a haunted gaze, “The truth is we could be closer still, and not just in commerce.”

“Ahem!” Paul gently cleared his throat, “Of course, that’s as it should be, after all, …… we’re all Lords of Aldo, aren’t we?” Paul increased his tone on Aldo.

Wendell smiled a little and gently raised his glass.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Count Graiman!”

He knew that some things couldn’t be rushed.

“Nice to meet you too, Sir Wendell!”

Paul and he drained their respective glasses.

“What did Giles’ man say to you?”

To Paul’s surprise, Catherine had come to him of her own accord.

“Uh, some polite words!”

Paul replied with a relaxed face.

“He said that they people there like things from the Northwest Gulf and would like to continue to increase trade.”

“Hmph!” At the mention of Giles, Catherine seemed to puff up a bit.

She said with some hatred, “That’s one of the great disgraces of my life!”

“What?”

“He started a rebellion, but I can’t believe I’ve let that fellow remain at large to this day, and there’s nothing I can do about it.”

It was the same as Paul had known, and it seemed as if Catherine had won less than completely when she had led the army to put down the rebellion in the south, even to the point of letting Giles win on the inside.

After all, the lords of that land had been all his.

“Perhaps …… you could make it a little easier on yourself ……”

The pretty girl’s frown was nice to look at, but Paul thought it would be better to comfort.

“Have an easy life? I’d love to!”

Catherine shook her head, her expression somewhat miserable and bitter looking.

She slowly lowered her head again.

“Perhaps, by the time I get to the Northwest Bay, I’ll be living that kind of life.”

Without an army to train and politics to deal with, she would be a common noblewoman herself.

Planting some flowers and grasses on weekdays, trimming the flower lawn, organizing an afternoon tea party with other noble women if nothing else, and occasionally going to see a theater performance in company.

This kind of life seems to be quite cozy.

“That’s a beautiful place.” Paul smiled, “I think you’ll enjoy the Northwest Bay.”

Catherine looked over at Paul with mixed feelings.

No matter what, this was the man in front of her that she was going to spend her life with.

“Gr…… Paul.”

She softly called Paul’s name.

“Oh, Your Highness.”

“Just call me Catherine from now on.”

“Yes, Your Highness.”

“I assume you’ll be staying at Jingyao for a while?”

Hearing Catherine ask that, Paul nodded, “Yes. It’s the first time I’ve been this far away from the Northwest Bay, and I want to learn more about the outside world.”

A blush appeared on Catherine’s face, “Then …… I hope we can meet more often in the future.”

Oh, it was the first time Paul had seen this military princess show such a cute expression.

“I hope so too, Your Highness.”

“It’s all said and done ……”

“Catherine!”
