Chapter 534 Rebellion 2

Chapter 534 Rebellion 2
“Hiccup!”

Paul covered his mouth and burped.

“That was some good roasted venison back there, Fergus is really good.”

Accompanied by Victor and Lardy, he slowly made his way back to his tent, savoring the deliciousness of what he had just eaten.

The hunting party was camping in the forest tonight, and it was the first time Paul had ever camped in the wilderness, either in his previous life or his current one. Tents, campfires, whole barbecues, everything was very new to him. If this is in the past life can not enjoy these, set fire to the mountain, the bottom of the prison to sit through ah.

The lord’s camp was set up in a separate place, not adjacent to the others – Fergus and the others – and the center tent was Paul’s, surrounded by six tents for Victor, Laddie, and the guards, whose tents surrounded Paul’s tent. Their tents just surrounded Paul’s tent, and outside of it there was a ring of rejects.

The sun had set by now, and the guards lit torches and stuck them in the ground to light up the camp.

Paul took out his pocket watch and looked at it, it was now after 8:00 p.m., “It’s still early for me to go to bed, if you guys aren’t going to sleep either, how about playing a few games of cards in my tent? Victor, you go get a couple more people.”

Today’s hunt had made him feel like he had a strong hand, and he wondered if the luck in the hunting field would carry over to the card game.

“Yes, Lord Gleeman, I’ll go get some people.” Viktor was very happy that the lord’s card skills were lousy, which meant he was going to have another windfall.

Lardy gave Paul a pitying look and nodded in agreement.

“What are you? Stand away!”

A soft bellow came from the entrance to the camp, and the three couldn’t help but turn to look there.

Only to see the guard on duty pressing one hand on the hilt of his sword and pointing one hand at a man outside. With the light from the torch, Paul could see what he was wearing, and he seemed to be dressed as a servant.

Possibly one of Fergus’s? Or perhaps one of the Valens? The gathering had just ended, was there some after-dinner event he was invited to?

“I have something important to report to Lord Greymane!”

The visitor seemed to recognize Paul and shouted towards him, his voice a little shaky. But what made it very strange was that even though he was shouting, it was as if he was trying his best to lower his voice, as if he was afraid of being heard by the bystanders.

Paul shouted to the guard, “Let him in!”

The two guards standing watch came forward and felt the visitor up and down before letting him in.

Victor moved toward the visitor, isolating Paul behind himself.

“Who sent you? What business do you have with Lord Graiman at this hour?”

The visitor had an anxious look on his face, “I am from the Ministry of Intelligence, Lord Graiman, your life is in danger tonight!”

A single sentence shocked everyone in the room into horror.

Victor reacted the fastest, he looked around and yanked the visitor, “Go, talk to me in the tent.”

Then he instructed the two guards from earlier, “Inform everyone to be on the highest level of alert, don’t let a single outsider in, but be careful not to move too much.”

“Yes, Lord Victor.”

The two guards realized that something big was about to happen and immediately went to inform their companions.

Victor tugged tightly on the arm of his visitor and walked into the tent in the middle of the camp with Paul and Lardy. He glared at the other man, “Say, what exactly is going on?” But the hand still didn’t let go.

The man dressed as a servant took a few breaths and spoke, “My name in Intelligence is Brandi, here my name is Mick, it was two years ago that Lord Cecil arranged for me to work as a servant for the Valen family, and not only me, but other companions were placed into other families separately. Last month, the upline informed me to keep a close eye on any movement in the target family, especially how they react to the Council of Government’s tax reform policy. But I’m not an old man who has been serving the Valen family for generations, and I haven’t gained the Valen family’s trust yet, and the information they’ve divulged to me has been very limited, so I haven’t been able to pry anything out of them for a while.”

“But starting the day before yesterday, I and the other servants were suddenly put on a mission, and Dimitri Varun had us transport a large shipment of fire-starters – sulfur and the like – to be placed in the forests in the area. ”

“Fire-starters?” The crowd gasped, thinking of a horrible possibility; it was all trees and plants where they were now.

“Yes, it’s all fire-starting stuff. And more to the point, it wasn’t that long ago that the Valens assigned us weapons and told us to do what we were told – no matter what orders we were given.”

“Weapons?” Paul’s heart felt as if something had gripped it.

It didn’t even take a fucking second to think that someone was definitely out to get him.

“Huh! Oh!”

Paul laughed in anger, his arms shivering uncontrollably – exasperated, of course.

“Yeah! Bravo! They really can do something like that. Guess I was optimistic after all.”

Victor, on the other hand, angrily grabbed Brandi by the collar, “Then why didn’t you inform us earlier!”

Brandi had a pained look on his face, “Forgive my incompetence, my lord, the servants including me are being guarded very tightly, if they leave without authorization they will surely be beaten to death on the spot, they have never cared about the lives of us underlings. I reckon that when the time comes to strike, these non-core underlings must be used as cannon fodder to rush up first to fight for their lives in order to consume your chi. I was able to come out now under the pretext that I had just eaten a bad meal, and I pretended to be the only one who could sneak out.”

Among the people in the tent, Lardy was the only one whose expression didn’t fluctuate much as she calmly asked, “Since we’ve already learned of their plot, how about making the first move? Brandi, how many of them do you estimate to be involved in striking?”

Paul also asked, “Or how about we quietly run away?”

Brandi said with an ugly face, “How can it be that there must be more than five hundred people ambushed in this forest, and it is rumored that they have also set up manpower outside of the forest, blocking all the intersections, a few big families have put in their blood this time in order to assassinate Lord Gleeman.”

Victor quickly concluded that breaking out was unrealistic, and a major reason that just came to mind was that their horses were tied up with those of the several great families.

Lardy spoke decisively toward Paul, “Lord Gladman, let’s make a good defense then, there’s no telling what traps they’ve laid along the way if they break out. I’m sure that with the elite of the lord’s guards we can hold off the rebels for a while, and then try to inform those outside as soon as possible.”

Paul asked with an anxious face, “Notify? How to notify? Organize death squads to rush out?”

The green-haired sorceress beckoned, and the next second something fluttered into the tent, no, it flew in and ended up landing on top of the sorceress’s shoulder.

Paul shot a look and it turned out to be the large parrot that Lardy kept, said parrot was about the size of an eagle. He had seen this parrot a few times before. Did it follow its owner on this hunting trip? How come he never realized it.

“Will it …… work?”

“Yes!” Lardy said with utter certainty.

“But …… what if they set fire to the forest?”

“Then let them play with fire!”

A flash of color flashed in the green-haired witch’s eyes.
