Chapter 525 Circuit Court

Chapter 525 The Circuit Court
“My boy!”

Seeing that his grandson was still hesitating, the old man’s tone took on a few hints of urgency.

“Can’t you see that Paul Gleeman has fallen? His flesh has been contaminated and invaded by the evil that comes from nowhere, his original noble soul that belongs to the nobility has long since ceased to be pure, our lord has become the devil’s spokesman in the world, and he …… will sooner or later give birth to calamities No, he has already given birth to calamities now, and our family’s situation isn’t proof of that? ”

The old man said indignantly:
“If it is only the appropriation of wealth, it is fine, the world is also full of lords who are knocking the bones and marrow of the lords, what can we do? One can only hope that his descendants are not as greedy as his fathers. But …… but Paul Gleiman has also humiliated us to the utmost in character.”

The young man shook his head incredulously, “No, Count Gleiman is a very easy-going person in life, how could he humiliate people for no reason?”

“Oh, my child!” The old man changed his attitude to one of seriousness, “For those who are truly sinister, reckless face-to-face insults are something they don’t care to do; what they are keen on is to give you a stab with a sharp dagger in the dark. They respect you, befriend you, and even flatter you on the surface, but in private they light up their fangs like vipers, slandering your reputation, corrupting your prestige, and making your name stink among the people.”

The young man murmured and asked, “Has our lord done such a thing?”

“Done?” With some amusement, the old man said sarcastically, “He does it every day!”

“My boy, do you know about the Circuit Court?”

“I know.”

The old man leaned hard on his cane again, “The very existence of this so-called Circuit Court is a disgrace to us, and as long as it exists, as long as it exists, so long do we suffer humiliation.”

“How so?”

“You know, our family has been the ruler of this village since ancient times, whenever the villagers have disputes, they will find us to adjudicate, this is the result of the prestige accumulated by the family over the generations, people believe in our prestige, believe in our justice, and accept our order, so our family naturally has the power to adjudicate in this place, for those who have made mistakes, we have the power to impose punishments, for those who have made mistakes, we have the power to impose punishments, for those who have made mistakes, we have the power to impose punishments. We have the power to inflict punishment, and for those who commit crimes, we even have the power to put them to death.”

“But since Paul Gleeman established the Circuit Court, these natural powers in our hands have begun to be gradually taken away. Almost every law he has enacted has been directed against us. It is surprising that those villains who should be sure to die need to be tried and convicted by the lord’s judges themselves, and the monthly circuit overturns the precedents that have been clearly ruled upon. How many villains and rogues have been released by the assizes to allow these scum to continue to disturb our quiet and peaceful lives.”

“More to the point, it was a crushing blow to our family’s prestige; what we said no longer held sway in the village, and the foolish mudbloods no longer held our words as truth; they turned to that greater authority in Lakewood and offered their knees.”

“Is there a greater humiliation than this, this, this ……? Ahem ahem.”

At this point, the old man coughed again in agitation.

“You know what?”

He stepped forward and grabbed his staggering grandson with such force that the young man even wondered if the grandfather in front of him had gotten younger.

“Just a month ago, the patriarch of this family, the oldest man in this village, your grandfather – me – was severely humiliated by the Circuit Court.”

The young man held his agitated grandfather so he wouldn’t fall, and asked in surprise, “What exactly happened?” “A month ago, I gathered the whole village in the clearing at the entrance of the village with the intention of publicly punishing three scoundrels who had evaded their debts.”

The young man asked, “Is it a debt owed to our family?” But he immediately felt that he was asking too much; the only ones in this village capable of lending debts were his own family, I believe.

“Yes.” His grandfather answered as a matter of course.

“It’s natural that if you owe money, you have to pay it back, and these three scoundrels, they’re planning to just walk away and not pay it back, where in the world can you find such a good thing.”

The young man could not help asking, “Where are they going to flee to?”

The old man spat on the ground, “Bah, to run away to the city to work, a bunch of cheap bastards! Ah, that’s another of Paul Greiman’s great sins, using some factory to attract a bunch of untouchables to run to the city, in the long run, who will farm the land, won’t the countryside be barren? Hah!”

The old man turned the topic back to the insult he had suffered once again, “I had my servants tie up the three scoundrels and first executed them with flogging, then announced that they would be left at home to do labor to pay off their debts-that’s what has been done since ancient times for those who don’t pay and who run away from their debts. But is there any justice in the world that the families of the three villains should have gone to the assizes and prevented me from punishing them? Is there any justice in that?”

The old man questioned loudly into the air before him, as if there stood Paul Gleeman.

“Why? The Circuit Court isn’t so far gone.” The young man asked.

The old man huffed, “The circuit court said the interest rate we set exceeded the cap set by the lords and was usurious.”

“To hell with usury, son, go ask the neighboring villages if there are any other lenders who set lower interest rates than our family. It is surprising that we have committed evil with the Lords by giving such a low interest rate in a spirit of kindness and compassion.”

“Do you know what the personnel of the Circuit Court did? At first I stopped their nonsense on the ground of sacred traditions which cannot be profaned, and the first time they came in a small number, only three, and retired after I had rebuked them verbally and they had reasoned with me. In the afternoon, however, they came with 60 men, most of them so-called policemen, heavily armed with shiny swords and knives, which our family, which has always been quiet and peaceful, had never seen before. In the name of the Lords, they rudely and savagely broke into our manor and robbed the three scoundrels who owed us money. My God, this was done in broad daylight, in front of the entire village of over 600 people.”

At this, the old man covered his face with his dry hands.

“I …… have lost this old face of mine! This is hitting my face, this is hitting our entire family’s face!”

“The prestige that my family has built up in the village for hundreds of years has just been lost in one …… alas!”

The old man sighed painfully.

And the young man, fell into a long silence.

“Go and talk to your father again, boy.”
