Chapter 493: War and disorder 3

Chapter 493: War Trouble 3
Hearing the plea of the cart driver, the three soldiers holding long swords did not show the slightest expression.

They just glanced at each other, and the one who got up to be the oldest among them took a step towards the cart driver who was kneeling on the ground and Liszt who was standing next to him.

This man was tall and robust, wearing a chain armor, with a thick beard, deep-set eye sockets and glaring eyes, he looked like a powerful warrior.

As he approached the coachman and Lister, he slowly said, “Gentlemen, please don’t be nervous, the three of us just happen to be passing by this place.”

But Lister instinctively felt that this man’s whole body was tense, as if he was making preparations for an attack, giving him the feeling as if he was a panther that was just ready to charge at its prey.

Just when the situation felt like it was going to develop towards an unfavorable situation, Lister made an instant decision and raised his tone of voice, risking the danger of being discovered by the church’s army outside the forest, and shouted:
“I am the envoy of the Lord of Aldo, Count Lord Paul Greiman!”

Lord! Count!
These two words immediately shocked the bearded man who was about to make a move – in Lister’s senses.

He seemed to begin to hesitate, and one of his companions, seeing his hesitation, said viciously, “Raja, nobody knows we passed through here anyway?”

The companion gave Lister a look, “Except for these guys.”

“Shut up, stupid!”

The bearded man called Raja glared fiercely at his companion, these guys hadn’t experienced the pain of being retaliated against by the nobles, in case this man in front of them was some kind of crony.

Lister’s heart was beating wildly, from the two men’s conversation, he could almost conclude that the bearded man was going to take out himself and the cart driver just now.

He tried to slow his heart down, maintaining composure on his face – even he was beginning to admire his strong will.

“I was traveling to Yebu on the orders of Count Gleiman to negotiate a business deal for his family, but I ran into chaos on my way out.”

He pulled out a roll of parchment from his pocket “without haste” and said, “These are my credentials! If you don’t believe me, you can read what’s on it.”

He then handed the parchment to the bearded warrior.

It was indeed a certificate of identity, a contraption that Paul had modeled after the passports of his previous life, and it contained a request for the local rulers to make things easy for the merchants from the Northwestern Gulf, with the family coat of arms of Gladman printed on it.

Of course, this world does not have the previous set of international system, the main function of this thing is to prove that the holder from the Northwest Bay, the local rulers are willing to sell to Paul face all depends on the mood.

Lester is gambling, he is betting on whether this bearded warrior and his companion can read and write, and …… whether he can bluff them with a nobleman’s coat of arms.

In fact, he wasn’t too hopeful in his heart, just now the bearded warrior’s companion didn’t seem too afraid of taking out a noble’s emissary – without anyone else knowing about it. If there wasn’t still a sliver of hope holding him up, Lister would have collapsed to the ground long ago.

“The finishing touches around this coat of arms are indeed the style of the Aldo nobles! He really is a messenger.”

The bearded warrior was “knowledgeable” and recognized the noble coat of arms, but Lister bet right that he couldn’t read and didn’t see what was on the parchment scroll.

Too simple! Lister sighed in his heart.

“I have heard of Paul Gleeman.”

The bearded warrior said.

“Oh? You have heard of my lord?”

“Yes. Two years ago, I was an adventurer making a living in Nisborough, and I heard from my peers that it was the warriors under Earl Greymane’s command who saved Archduke Eaton’s wife and sister from the wolf plague.”

“Huh? Is that so.”

It was the first time Liszt had heard of this.

“May I ask your name?” “Friedrich Lister, you can just call me Lister.”

“Well, Lord Lister, we …… we do just happen to be passing through here …… as you can see, we …… “

The bearded warrior’s previously tense body relaxed, but began to stammer as he spoke.

“Well, I know what you are, rest assured that I will not speak out of turn, I swear it to my lord and my heavenly father.”

Lister raised his right hand and said solemnly.

In fact, judging from the other party’s attire, these three should be Jeb’s deserters.

The face of the bearded warrior reddened slightly, “I’ve made you look at me funny my lord, but …… we just don’t want to become captives and then slaves in a battle that we’re bound to lose.”

His face turned to indignation again, “The lord of Yeb, that coward, when he learned of the presence of the church’s army outside of the city, ran off with the lame excuse of hunting, leaving behind a city full of his people and an army still loyal to him.”

“When I learned of this news, I instantly felt that the oath I had previously made had been trampled on to the point of worthlessness, so I led the other two brothers away.”

Upon saying this, the warrior named Raja spat viciously on the ground.

“Uh …… I understand how you felt at the time, and of course, in my opinion, your behavior was completely moral, after all, that Lord What’s-his-name broke the contract first.”

What else could Lister say, but stroke the other man’s fur of course.

Just as he was about to ask himself, and the cart driver and his wife, when he would be able to leave, the warrior named Raja suddenly asked, “Sir, where are your guards?”

Escort? Where would I have any guards?
Lister’s face immediately changed to a hint of sadness, not showing a single emotion of surprise or panic.

“They are trying to protect me, alas …… not everyone is as reasonable as Mr. Raja, I must go back and tell the Earl-sama and ask him for revenge.”

The sad expression spiraled into viciousness.

“Then ……”

That Raja made a proposal that surprised Liszt greatly:

“If you lack guards, you can hire the three of us to provide you with security.”

“Huh?”

……

In the autumn of 1995 of the Holy Calendar, the war in the Gulf of Horns finally broke out, and the Church of the Gulf of Horns branded the coastal nations as heretics on the grounds of blasphemy and assassination of clerical hierarchs, organizing a Protectorate dominated by the landlocked nation of Collins and announcing that it would crusade against the coastal nations, swearing to return the faith there to its rightful place.

The coastal nations, on the other hand, publicly declared that they would only recognize the rising Protestantism as representing the Lord of Light, and organized a Protestant army, led by the Corner Bay Alliance, to fight against the Protectorate of the Corner Bay Church.

Because they foresaw the inevitability of war, within a month of the assassination, the Horned Bay Alliance organized a powerful army of 15,000 men, well-equipped, and stationed them at the borders to prevent the invasion of the Church’s army, and planned to join with the armies of the coastal allies to continue their attack on the Church’s territory, all the way to Collins.

However, what no one expected was that the Protectorate had gone into undeclared war, brazenly invading several small neutral countries located in the northern part of the Gulf of Horns, and through the territories of these countries, they had extended their tentacles all of a sudden into the northern coastal countries that did not have any borders before-which were also the territories of the Protestant Army.

These countries on the northern coast, because they were not close to the Protectorate, did little defense before the war, and some of their armies had already left to join the allied forces in the Gulf of Horns, so they were in a dangerous situation when they were confronted with the Protectorate’s “borrowed route” attack.

The war in Horn Bay was a confusing one from the very beginning.
