Chapter 456: “The Savage”
Chapter 456 “The Savage”
Makarov hadn’t expected to run into unforeseen circumstances in his first week as principal.
Were there still savages in the forest on the north bank of the Vise River? It was something no one had expected.
He and the militia company commander, Kagit, led a search party all the way north along the forest trails frequented by the lumberjacks.
It was about a two-hour journey from the town of Northwatch – it would have taken less than an hour on a normal day, but because they were searching and traveling at the same time, it took more time.
“Up ahead is where the paid carpenters reported the sighting.”
Khajiit pointed ahead.
Makarov looked in the direction he was pointing, only to see a clearing appear in the middle of the forest ahead, with a number of short wooden stumps scattered about.
He took out his binoculars and pointed the lens at the area and searched it carefully.
“There seems to be traces of camping ahead ……. Kajit, have everyone form a battle formation and be on alert.”
“Yes, Sir Makarov!”
Kagit passed the order down layer by layer. The militia of the two factions immediately prepared for battle, bending their bows and arrows and sheathing their swords.
The group slowed their pace and slowly approached the lumberyard.
“Up front! Are you people of Arda?” –Suddenly, a loud voice came from the front.
The militiamen stopped in their tracks and looked at each other.
The words were not only in Aldorian, but in an authentic northwestern accent.
Khajiit looked at Makarov, waiting for his officer’s orders.
Makarov frowned, thought hard for a moment, and finally said, “Respond to them, and ask for the other man’s identity.”
Khajiit pulled out the megaphone he used to shout to the militia and shouted, “We are the militia under the rule of Lord Alda Paul Gleiman, what is your identity.”
The other side quickly answered back, “We are members of the Northern Exploration Fleet!”
The Northern Exploration Fleet, the militia present had all heard of it, it was no secret that the lord had sent three fleets to explore the world, the commotion was quite loud when they set off, and slowly the entire Northwest Bay had heard about it.
Khajiit asked loudly, “Why are you in the forest? Where are your ships?”
Now at least it was certain that the other party was not a savage.
“It’s hard to say, we first encountered the plague in the far north, then we hit the reef and sank a ship, and the rest of the ship was frozen in the harbor because of the weather. So part of it went overland first, over the Rockies back to the Northwest Gulf.”
After a few mutual questions and answers, neither side sensed anything wrong on the other side, and made careful contact to further confirm the identity of the other.
“Headmaster of the Public School and Station Commander of the Military Service Station in the town of Northern Hope, Lieutenant Boris Makarov, pleased to make your acquaintance.”
“Commander of the Northern Quest Fleet, Stanford, it is also a pleasure to meet you.”
The two hands clasped together.
One by one, the members of the Exploration Fleet came out of hiding.
Makarov looked at the group of “refugees” in front of him and said somewhat sympathetically, “I say, man, your situation seems a bit miserable.” Indeed, they were all disheveled and their clothes were a bit tattered.
Stanford said helplessly, “The last place we repaired was in the Dwarf Tribe on Rocky Mountain, and then all we’ve passed through since we traveled south is either forests or swamps, and now this is already a pretty good look. I hadn’t thought about it at all before, but it turns out that this forest north of Arda is even more desolate north of the Rocky Mountains, and you can still encounter indigenous tribes from time to time on the other side of the mountains.”
Makarov’s eyes widened, “Dwarves? You say you’ve traveled to tribes of dwarves?”
Those were creatures even more “legendary” than savages.
“Yes dwarves, legendary dwarves, we have seen them.”
Stanford chuckled, “Not only did we meet one, we brought one with us.”
“Brought one?” Makarov was surprised.
A jarring voice came to mind, “Let me speak for myself! Hey! That big human, look at this look at this!”
Makarov searched for the source of the voice and quickly spotted a short, stumpy fellow.
Although he was short – only up to his abdomen – he was very thick, and to Makarov, it seemed that this guy had no waist, and his whole body was shaped like a wine barrel, with a round head, thick arms and torso, which, when connected to each other, had the effect of reminding people of “roundness”. Round head, thick arms and torso, connected with each other, had the effect of reminding people of the adjective “round”.
The …… dwarf in front of him had a long beard that almost covered his face, and judging from Stanford’s words, it should be related to the fact that he had no time to take care of himself during this period of time, and the other members of the exploratory team were not much better, coupled with the thick fur clothes he was wearing, it made Makarov subconsciously think that it was a strange animal that the exploratory team brought back, rather than an intelligent animal. exotic animal rather than some intelligent creature.
“This is …… this a Dwarf pet you captured?”
A word that angered the already ill-tempered dwarf.
He waved his huge fists and angrily yelled, “I can understand your words, you stinking tall man! How dare you treat the honorable Imar Stonemason Lord as your human pets! I will teach you a good lesson!” After saying that, he was about to charge up.
Stanford’s eyes were quick, and with the equally quick-eyed Matthew by his side, he held both of Imar’s arms left and right, and they instantly riveted their whole body, dwarves have a lot of strength, especially when they are angry.
Immael whimpered and whined, fighting the two men.
“Mr. Lieutenant, apologize to our dwarven friend, he’s no pet.” Stanford, who was holding his red face, demanded as much to Makarov.
The Dwarf’s outburst caused Makarov to tense up for a moment, not because he was timid of course, but rather the faint feeling of fear or alarm that was bound to arise when confronted with an unfamiliar intelligent creature.
There was also a vague hint of amusement.
He snapped back to his senses and hastily said, “Forgive my rudeness and ignorance, my dwarven friend, but you must know that in all my life I have never seen an intelligent creature other than a human.”
Stanford said to the dwarf, who was still in a state of anger, “Look, Imar, Mr. Lieutenant has apologized, so don’t bother with him.”
And whispered, “Look at all those men he brought with him, all of them with swords and guns and crossbows!”
Only then did Imar stop making a scene and grunted heavily with his arms clasped to his chest.
This action made the militiamen behind Makarov snicker, they simply thought that even if a guy with a round body like a wine barrel was angry, he was still a bit cute, especially that last “grunt”.
Makarov “Alright! The ‘savage’ thing is over! Mr. Stanford, it looks like you guys are in dire need of rest now, so come with me, it’s about an hour’s walk south to Northwatch.”
“Great! I don’t know how long my crew and I have been looking forward to a nice hot shower. Besides, I have to see Lord Greymane as soon as possible.”
“You’ll see it soon enough.”
