Chapter 104 Canned goods
Chapter 104 The Canister
At exactly 8:00 in the morning, Erin arrived at the lord’s castle.
Because she had been working on the semaphore for the army before, she had stayed in the compound of the staff department for the convenience of discussing with the officers, either by running towards the barracks.
After the semaphore had taken initial shape, Paul ordered her to move her office to within the castle.
A servant led her to her “office”, a small room with a desk, a few chairs and a bookshelf with a kitchen.
Irene sighed and thought, “What a boss who doesn’t know the first thing about life!”
She didn’t complain that Paul was too stingy, because she had seen Paul’s own office, which was also monotonous to the extreme, not better than this place at all.
“That’s just it, it’s better for me to slowly dress it up myself in the future.”
She looked around the room left and right, pondering over the options for decorating the room.
At that moment came the sound of the door to the next room opening and closing.
She suddenly remembered that she had just heard the servant say that there was another advisor in the lord’s house, who was working right next door to her.
As a coworker she should take the initiative to make good relations, after all, now she was not the dazzling princess that everyone was vying to climb on before.
Irene walked out, gently knocked on the door of the next room, inside came a “please come in”, the voice was very beautiful and pleasant.
“Listening to the voice it should be a lovely girl, that earl wouldn’t be a lecher.”
With such thoughts in mind, Irene opened the door to the room, and then froze.
In front of her eyes stood the benefactor who had saved her from the tiger’s jaws a few months ago – scholar and adventurer Ms. Lardy.
Apparently, judging from the expression on the scholar lady’s face, she was also very surprised.
Erin quickly reacted and said graciously, “Oh, I didn’t expect it, but Ms. Lardy is the new advisor of the lord’s mansion. Hello!”
La Di also smiled and responded, “Hello, Ms. Diaz. I’ve heard Lord Greymane speak of you, and I apologize for not visiting you for several days.”
Erin shook her hand and said, “You couldn’t find me the other day, I’ve been staying at the army’s staff office, where you’re not allowed to just walk in and out.”
“Don’t talk to me so politely in the future, first you saved one of my lives, and now you’re my colleague, perhaps this is the providence of the heavens.”
Lardy smiled and nodded, the little worry in her heart disappearing without a trace.
That day when she saved Ms. Diaz from the mouth of the black-spotted tiger, although the other party also thanked her, but for some reason I always felt that the other party was a high-minded and proud person, but now it seems that it is not difficult to get along with.
“So, you’re giving up your career as an adventurer?”
“Yes, after traveling around for the past few years, it’s time to take a good rest.”
“Haha, I’m sure you’ve accumulated a lot of knowledge during your adventuring career, right? I’ll have to ask for more advice.”
“Likewise, as fellow scholars, please give me more guidance in the future.”
The two of them happily chatted, and since they were both women and scholars, they got along very well.
About half an hour later, a servant knocked on the door and came in, he respectfully said, “Lord Earl has invited the two counselors to meet in the dining room. “
Irene asked suspiciously, “Why the dining room? Is Earl Gleiman going to invite us for dinner, but this point is still early for lunch.”
The servant said, “I’m not sure, the Lord Earl just asked me to invite you.”
Erin beamed, “Really, Lardy and I were having a nice chat.”
The servant broke out in a cold sweat, he had yet to meet anyone who had complained about Earl Gladman in public, but he pretended not to hear it.
Lardy tugged on her sleeve and said, “Betty, we’d better get over there, it’s not good to keep Lord Gladman waiting.”
In only half an hour, they were intimate enough to call each other by their first names.
…… Erin and Lardy arrived at the dining room to find it already full of people.
In addition to Earl Greiman, there was Old Ford, the chief administrator of the Council of State, several supervisors including Hansel, Schroeder, Bryce, and other military executives.
“Oh, the two beauties are here, welcome welcome welcome.”
Count Gleiman seemed very happy and greeted them warmly.
In her heart, Irene kind of wanted to spit out, “Really, it’s almost time for a war, and you can still maintain such a good mood.”
After the two female advisors were seated, Paul said to the crowd, “I’ve gathered you all here today to treat you to a special food.”
He turned to his servant and ordered, “Set the items up.”
Soon, a strange glass bottle was placed one by one in front of the crowd.
Erin scrutinized the strange bottle in front of her, it was a wide-mouthed bottle made of thick glass, the mouth of which was tightly corked with a cork stopper and sealed with a layer of wax on the outside.
But what was most fascinating was the contents of the bottle, which appeared to be chopped apples.
She looked next to the bottle in front of Lardy, which contained what appeared to be pears.
Looking around, everyone else’s bottles contained different things, some vegetables, some meat. Most of them surveyed the glass bottles in front of them with puzzled eyes.
With the exception of a handful of people from the Council of State, who had heard Paul talk about this stuff a long time ago, and Chief Ford and Hansel had personally handled the establishment of the manufacturing plant for this stuff.
Paul happily announced, “Gentlemen, this is ‘canning’, a form of food processing that preserves food for long periods of time, now open them and taste the food inside.”
“Here, do it after me.”
Paul scraped the wax seal with a knife, then picked up the “corkscrew” next to the glass jars – a spiral metal hook – and screwed it firmly into the cork, then upward, and the cork was pulled out.
He picked up a fork, took a piece of beef out of it, and put it in his mouth to chew it slowly.
“Hmm! The flavor is good. Everyone feel free to eat, the food inside is cooked.”
All of them opened the wide-mouthed bottles in the same way as the Earl-sama did, and picked up their forks to taste the food inside of them.
“The flavor is okay!”
“The soup inside is also delicious.”
“It’s not as good as the freshly made ones, but if it can be preserved for a long time, that one is really an excellent invention.”
There was a lot of chatter among the crowd as they ate, especially among the military men, as Schroeder and Bryce began to whisper about the importance of canned goods to the army’s supplies.
Erin ate a chunk of apple, “Hmmm …… this apple tastes a little weird, but not bad. Lardy, what’s yours?”
Lardy nods her head, “I’ve got some sweet pear flesh in here, it tastes pretty good.”
Paul looked at the two female counselors and asked, “Both of you are people from the prosperous land, I wonder if this kind of thing can be sold in a big way when you get it to your place?”
La Di said, “If it can be preserved for a long time as you said, there is definitely no worry about selling it, especially those who often travel long distances, and it is decided that it will be popular among them.”
As a former adventurer she certainly knew what the invention of canning meant to travelers.
Erin also nodded her head repeatedly, although she had grown up with fine clothes and no shortage of food and drink, but she also knew it well from running all the way to the Northwest, tasty food like meat and vegetables deteriorated quickly, and when there was no village in front of her, she could only nibble on dry and hard black bread.
“Haha! Very good, we’re already mass-producing canned goods and will soon sell them over to the south.”
Paul announced happily to the crowd.
