Chapter 74: Taking over the Bairdings
Chapter 74 Taking Over Bairdine
Paul walked briskly into the hall of the lord’s house and greeted him warmly, “You’ve come quickly, my brother.”
With a look of surprise on his face, Myron comes over and hugs him, “You’re the one who’s fast, I thought the battle would last at least a week.”
The two found seats and sat down, Paul said with slight regret, “Unfortunately, only Ebout was killed by us while leading the charge of the knights, Angelo and the other two, along with that steward of yours, got away.”
“I guess they ran back to their fiefdoms to recruit again.”
Paul was disdainful, “Hmph! It’s the same death for as many as come.”
The two discussed the subsequent arrangements, although the battle was won by Paul, but after all, Myron Garnard was the Lord of Bairdine.
Finally decided to continue to sweep the two viscounts and two baronies involved in the conspiracy in the territory of Baildin, confiscate their properties, deprive these families of their titles and honors, if they can catch Angelo and others, they will be escorted back to the trial and hanged, and if they have already run away, they will be sent out to the neighboring territories to be wanted.
As for Baron Andrew, who led the troops south to quell the rebellion, before confirming whether or not he was involved in the conspiracy, his territory was not to be moved for the time being.
Of course, given that he had just experienced a fierce battle, Paul told Myron that his soldiers needed to rest for a while.
The two continued to chat for a while, when suddenly, Myron let out a long sigh.
After he returned to his home this time, things have long been different, inside the desolate, the original familiar faces have disappeared, although he knew that nine out of ten of the servants at home are the steward Miles arranged, but looking at the empty lord’s house heart still produced a huge sense of loss.
“Paul, I want to …… later,” Myron wanted to say.
“Well? What do you want later?”
After hesitating for a while, Myron finally said, “After hanging those traitors to avenge my father’s death, I plan to go to a monastery to become a monk in the future.”
“Pfft–” Paul, who had just finished drinking water, spat it out in one gulp.
Monks do not marry in their whole life, and spend their whole days eating, praying and chanting, dedicating their whole body and mind to the Lord of Light, if this is put on Earth, isn’t it just a recluse? If this were on Earth, wouldn’t it be a recluse? If you don’t want to be a good lord, why do you want to be that?
Paul heart anxious, he was anxious there are other reasons, originally planned to help the McLong counter-revolt, from his territory to pull a few mines and so on, which has a great help to his subsequent industrial development program.
He saved Myron’s life, helped him so big favor, plus the previous friendship, should be extremely good to talk.
But if Mellon now give up this lord’s seat, then Garnard family’s territory will be recovered by the royal family, or by which don’t know where to come out of the relative inheritance, then there is still his Paul Gleeman what matter? Wouldn’t this battle be in vain?
No, he must be made to dismiss this stupid idea, or at least delay this idea, and wait until he gets what he wants in Bairdine, then let him go.
He said in a rush, “Hey, hey, hey! Why did you suddenly have such a crazy idea?”
Mellon shook his head, “This idea actually hasn’t been around for a day or two, ever since I was rescued by you, I’ve felt disheartened. All my previous efforts and achievements were illusory, like bubbles that crumble at the touch of a button, I couldn’t stand it, I wanted to escape. Come to think of it only the Abbey is suitable for me to stay. It just so happens that you have a North Shore Abbey there, when you are busy, I have been there several times, and I think that the environment there is very good, and Mr. Abbot is also a very upright man. So I thought ……”
Paul shook his head back and forth, “Big mistake, big mistake!”
He tried hard to persuade Myron to give up this idea, finding all sorts of reasons, from the hard life in the convent to the various conveniences of being a noble, from the responsibilities that a party of lords shouldered to the Garnard family’s long, long history. Finally, he spat, incomparably sad and angry: “Do you do this to stand up to your father who was killed? Can you stand up to those soldiers under my command who sacrificed their lives to avenge your death?”
“Well ……,” Myron seemed to be moved by the words, and a look of shame appeared on his face. It was obvious that he had been hesitant before, and even more so when Paul had done this to him.
He held the water cup tightly with both hands and said with his head lowered, “But I’m afraid that I’ll still be an unqualified lord, you see I was fooled by Angelo and the others for so many years without realizing it, and if I continue to sit down in this seat, it’s unavoidable that I’ll be fooled by the others. Moreover, what I dealt with before were all fabrications, I’m afraid I don’t have the slightest idea about the real situation in the territory. Without someone around me that I can trust personally, what should I do?”
He put down his glass of water and covered his face with his hands, looking at a loss for words.
Well, it was time to play the role of a good brother in the know.
Paul reached out his right arm and wrapped it tightly around Myron’s back, “Hey bro. That last statement of yours made me so sad, did you forget that you still have me as a blood sworn brother? At least you can trust me.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll help you. I’ll help however you need it. Under my protection, no one will be able to deceive you or backstab you again.”
Mellon turned his head, and Paul was looking at him with a warm smile on his face, an unquestionably reliable good old boy look.
“Thank you, Paul.”
He thanked very sincerely, but then asked, “But what do I do now?”
“It’s what I should do.”
Paul held out a finger and said, “Seeing that you are so distressed, I have a proposition for you; if you have no one around you that you can rely on for the time being, perhaps I can get Chief Steward Ford to help you out a bit. He is well versed in all sorts of governmental affairs and has kept Alda in order, although Bairdine is a bit older than Alda, but I’m sure it shouldn’t be difficult for him.”
“Of course, provided you agree to the proposal. And we will report to you on anything related to Bairdin, after all, you are the true lord of Bairdin, and you have the final say on all matters within your territory.”
“Until such time as you find a capable and trustworthy new chief steward.”
With that statement Paul gazed into Myron’s eyes and waited for his brother’s reply.
To his surprise, there was little hesitation on the other man’s part, as Myron let out a breath as if relieved to hear it, then clasped his hand tightly and said, “I think that’s a good idea, Paul, let’s do as you say. I have talked freely with Chief Steward Ford several times in recent times, and he is indeed a steady and reliable old man, and with his assistance I think Bairdine will be able to get better and better.”
“Uh …… since you agree, then it’s done.” This is really an unexpected joy, he originally only wanted a few mines, but he didn’t expect that when he casually said it, Myron would so painfully hand over the management of Bairdin to him.
Bairdin was even larger and more populated than Arda, and with all the resources on it, he would be able to let go even more.
Paul hammered his palm vigorously and said excitedly, “Tomorrow we’ll set off to the fiefs of those few traitors, pull them out for trial, and avenge Uncle Garnard!”
Thank you for the reward from “The Cunning Villain is Me”.
