Chapter 86 – Blight and Answers (Request First Order)
Heine was only in her twenties before she crossed over.
Linumu looked about the same age as his father.
Coupled with the fact that the wood elf was usually proper and suddenly so eager, Heine was taken aback.
“What are you following me for?”
“I think the way to salvation is in you.”
“……”
Heine was silent.
He had talked to Jianglu about the Guardians, and with what Barry’s journal mentioned, it wasn’t hard to tell what the other man was thinking.
Barry said that the Guardians were psychics.
But it doesn’t mean that psychics are guardians!
He shook his head, “I can’t be a Guardian, I’m not an elf, I’m a human.
“In my eyes as a human in the mountains of Makara, your hero Sabelia is the damned invader.”
“It doesn’t matter.”
Linumu, however, was firm, stubborn as a log.
“I just realized that the Council of Elders didn’t mean for me to come looking for Saberia.
“Rather, I was told to come and find the people connected to it, and the answer lies with His Excellency.
“The past is so full of fog, I can’t see it.
“But the soil at hand is coming back to life, as I have seen with my own eyes.”
He looks to the hunting grounds to the south, then to the soil before him.
“Do you know why Sabelia, who is clearly a night elf, is the hero of all elves?”
Heine: “Why?”
“Because he was a trailblazer who preserved the face of the Silver Elf Royal Family and the Council of Elders, and solved problems that neither of them could solve.
“The elves who first came to the Whispering Forest were exiles, liars, thieves, and fugitives, and Sabellia consolidated them.
“Then, a steady stream of elves moved in, greatly easing the food pressure and population conflicts in the Mourning Wood and Mercury Forests, which led to the Night Elves.”
Heine listened straight to the good guy, Columbus had belonged to is.
But he was even more curious.
Is the Everlasting Race’s population pressure so great?
And a race that gave birth to so many tree herders ……
“Is the elven population large?” He asked.
Linumu shook his head:
“Not much, except that the soil we occupy gradually loses its vitality, as does the farmland.
“The initial job of the Tree Herders was simply to remove weeds from the fields and maintain the crops.
“But then food production declined and they had to learn and use spells to ripen their crops and make up for the food gap.
“The tree herders’ spells became more and more sophisticated, but the food production became lower and lower.
“We changed many kinds of crops and tried fallowing and fertilizing to try to bring back the natural cycle, but none of this worked.
“Even switching to a different location is just repeating the above process all over again, and in the end, all that is left is a dead field where the plants can’t sustain themselves, which we call blight.
“It was as if this was a curse, or a punishment for the elves, and to this day there is no answer.”
Heine listened in silence, and a doubt arose.
Curse or punishment.
All come from hatred.
So why is there hatred?
Who was cursing them?
He’s not the only one who’s wondering.
Guardian Iris: “What’s this dude chattering about?”
Mr. Xia: “I get this one, Heine all but asked him about the population, odds are he’s explaining why the elves are running out of food.”
Sheep Catch: “Huh? Why would elves run out of food? Why didn’t I hear about that when I was in the pit?”
Teacher Xia: “The elves were half dead when you entered the pit, so naturally there’s no pressure. Sister Ventriloquist told that the secret mage who fought off the blight was taken away by the Lion King’s people, the second Blight Mark erupted, followed by the Battle of Mourning Wood Valley, and many elves died.”
Catch the Goat: “So why was there a shortage of food in the past?”
Guardian Iris: “Yes, why?”
Mr. Xia: “…… Xia also wants to know.”
…
Heine sighed inwardly.
These three brothers were truly useless!
Not only did he miss Sister Belly, but he also missed Mr. Sa.
At least it was half elfcom.
Speaking of which, it’s time to find out what happened to Eli Monte from Naga the Mage.
He looks to Linumu, “I don’t know where the answers you are looking for are, so why don’t you work on this land and get it back to normal soon, I’ll relay this to Dylan.”
“Good.”
Linumu agreed painfully.
Heine: “By the way, this won’t violate the Four Nations Convention, will it?” Linumu shook his head, “I’m a member of the Holy Healing Society, this is supposed to be my duty.”
Heine bristled.
The Holy Healing Society was so awesome.
It didn’t take long for Dylan to finish his reprimand and greet him inside.
Walking into the house, it turned out that Barry wanted to go to the cellar to check out the genesis spell.
Heine relays Linumu’s request, and Dylan fixes him with a creepy look.
“You just destroyed the Emerald Leaf Court and dug up the elves’ crypt, and right after that a wood elf comes to join you? He’s also a fifth level tree herder?”
Heine: “You suspect something is wrong with him?”
“No, I think you have a problem.”
“Huh?” Heine laughed, “Is it because the old man thinks highly of me that you’re jealous of me?”
“Hmph. What do you have to be jealous of.”
Dylan passed between the three skeletons, forcing his eyes not to stray.
Still, he couldn’t help but take one more look at Sheep Catchers’ Soulfire.
That golden soulfire shone even brighter.
…
Coming to the cellar, Barry showed a wistful look.
Heine had painted the outline of the spell with silver powder on the floor before.
Thus even if he couldn’t open the pupils of the dead, and even if his meta-affinity wasn’t enough, Barry could still see the spell formation.
Heine had Catch the Goat stand on the spell formation and walked through the process.
Barry didn’t feel anything special, but once he opened his mouth Heine was shocked.
“There are five spells like this one, and I’ve heard you’ve found three.”
Huh?
Heine was stunned, “Five? Do you know where the other two are?”
When he asked, the skeletons were stunned as well.
Mr. Xia: “Crap, an aborigine more knowledgeable than Sister Belly has appeared!”
Catch the Goat: “Such an awesome NPC, you guys actually didn’t realize it when you opened the service?”
Wei Temple Iris: “That’s right, you guys are a bunch of pure and innocent wastes out of the east!”
Teacher Xia: “…… Damn, Sa always attacked me when he was gone, didn’t he! You guys give me wait!”
….
However Barry shook his head:
“The old lord at the time told me so, and he even suggested that I buy this place and guard this spell for him.”
Heine: “But didn’t you also say before that you bought this place for the love of your life ……”
Barry tugged at the corner of his mouth, “That’s the only answer, but not the only reason.”
Heine admired.
That’s good old man ……
“And was there anyone living in the northeast at the time?” He asked.
“I haven’t paid attention there.”
Right.
The old man at that time was so spirited that it made sense not to focus on that ……
Barry added, “But now that we’ve identified the locations of the three spells, and the other two are pretty well speculated upon, I’d suggest you look in the southeast and southwest directions.”
Heine was thoughtful.
Right on the money, the Pitch Black Grotto and the eastern suburb of the lumberyard.
The lumberyard was north of the Eastern Suburbs farm, owned by the half-elves of Greenleaf.
He thought of the re-blooded Todd.
That’s when Barry spoke again:
“By the way, if you can even use this spell, why don’t you try to master ‘psionics’?”
“Psionics?” Heine was puzzled, “What exactly does it refer to ……”
“It’s the effect presented by the spell formation, i.e., you can use the corresponding spell even if you are detached from the spell formation.”
What?
Heine was shocked.
“Why does it work even when it’s out of the spell?”
Barry’s face broke into a grin, no less horrified than Dylan’s.
It was Gitil’s characteristic “you’re so stupid your question hurts” grin.
“Since the detachment spells don’t work, how did the metamagic spells come into being?”
